This is to notify the general public and all aspiring students of the University of Maiduguri (UNIMAID) that the Department of Islamic Studies admission requirements has been published.
The requirements below cover the O’Level subject combination, the four subjects sat in JAMB UTME, the A Level route into Direct Entry, and the JAMB score that makes an Islamic Studies application eligible for screening at Maiduguri.
The department allows a choice at O’Level that it does not allow later. Either Islamic Studies or Arabic will satisfy the credit condition there, but the UTME combination names Islamic Studies specifically alongside the compulsory English Language.
Candidates relying on an Arabic credit should note that difference before registering for JAMB. It is the single point in these conditions where an applicant can meet one stage comfortably and still fall short at the next.
Entry Requirements
O’Level Subject Combination
The O’level subject combination and requirements needed to study Islamic Studies include Five SSCE credit passes in the following subjects:
English Language and Islamic Studies or Arabic and any three (3) relevant subjects.
JAMB UTME Subject Combination
Candidates will write the following Four (4) Subjects in JAMB.
- English Language
- Islamic Studies plus two (2) other Arts subjects
Direct Entry Requirement
These are the conditions you need to fulfil to gain Direct Entry admission to study Islamic Studies if you don’t intend to use UTME. You require;
Two (2) ‘A’ level passes to include Islamic Studies.

Confirming Your Subjects for UNIMAID Islamic Studies
The O’Level condition asks for five SSCE credit passes made up of English Language, either Islamic Studies or Arabic, and three other relevant subjects. Arts subjects are the natural fit for those three, given the UTME combination the department sets.
In UTME, sit English Language and Islamic Studies plus two other arts subjects. A JAMB score of at least 160 is the threshold for eligibility, and the departmental cut-off for the session is a separate figure worth checking before you apply.
Direct Entry here is narrow. Two A Level passes are required and Islamic Studies must be one of them, so an applicant holding Arabic but not Islamic Studies at A Level should speak to the department before assuming the pass will be accepted.
