This is to notify the general public and all aspiring students of the University of Maiduguri (UNIMAID) that the Department of Linguistics admission requirements has been published.

The requirements below cover the O’Level credit passes, the four subjects sat in JAMB UTME, the A Level and NCE route into Direct Entry, and the JAMB score needed to qualify for screening into Linguistics at Maiduguri.
Linguistics is a language-centred course, and the subject conditions show it. English Language is compulsory at O’Level and in UTME, and a second language subject is required alongside it in the UTME combination.
The Direct Entry route goes a step further by stating a preference for an African language among the qualifying passes. Candidates with that background should make it visible on their application rather than assume the department will spot it.
Entry Requirements
O’Level Subject Combination
The O’level subject combination and requirements needed to study Linguistics include the following:
Five (5) SSCE credit passes, including English Language.
JAMB UTME Subject Combination
Candidates will write the following Four (4) Subjects in JAMB.
- English Language
- Any Language and two (2) other subjects.
English Language fills the compulsory slot, the language subject fills the second, and the final two subjects are open. The department does not name the other four O’Level credits either, so check the current JAMB brochure entry before registering.
Direct Entry Requirement
These are the conditions you need to fulfil to gain Direct Entry admission to study Linguistics if you don’t intend to use UTME. You require;
Two (2) ‘A’ level passes or NCE to include any Language, preferably an African Language.

About the University of Maiduguri
The University of Maiduguri (UNIMAID) is a Federal higher education institution in Maiduguri, Borno State’s capital city in northeast Nigeria.
The federal government of Nigeria established the university in 1975 with the goal of it becoming one of the country’s primary higher-education institutions.
With a large student and staff population, the University of Maiduguri admits students from all over Nigeria, regardless of race, culture, or religion.
Language Subjects Decide the UNIMAID Linguistics Application
For UTME candidates the checklist is short. Five SSCE credit passes including English Language, four JAMB subjects made up of English Language, another language and two further subjects, and a JAMB score of at least 160 to be eligible for screening.
Direct Entry applicants need two A Level passes or an NCE, and a language must be among them. The department states a preference for an African language, so an applicant offering one is in a stronger position than one offering a language outside that group.
Candidates should confirm which language subjects the university accepts for the session before committing. Where an applicant is unsure whether their language qualification counts, asking the department in writing ahead of registration is faster than discovering the problem at screening.
