This is to notify the general public and all aspiring students of the University of Maiduguri (UNIMAID) that the Department of Nursing/Nursing Science admission requirements has been published.
The requirements below cover the O’Level subject combination, the four subjects sat in JAMB UTME, two separate Direct Entry routes, and the JAMB score that makes a Nursing application eligible for screening at the University of Maiduguri.
Nursing and Nursing Science at UNIMAID is built on a fixed science base. Mathematics, Chemistry, Biology, Physics and English Language make up the five SSCE credits, and three of those sciences reappear in the UTME subject combination.
The department also recognises practising nurses. Holders of the Registered Nurse or Registered Midwife qualification have their own entry route, which is set out in the Direct Entry section below alongside the A Level path.
Entry Requirements
O’Level Subject Combination
The O’level subject combination and requirements needed to study Nursing/Nursing Science include Five SSCE credit passes in the following subjects:
Mathematics, Chemistry, Biology, Physics, and English Language.
JAMB UTME Subject Combination
Candidates will write the following Four (4) Subjects in JAMB.
- English Language
- Physics
- Chemistry
- Biology
Direct Entry Requirement
These are the conditions you need to fulfil to gain Direct Entry admission to study Nursing/Nursing Science if you don’t intend to use UTME. You require;
- Two (2) ‘A’ Level passes in Biology/Zoology and Chemistry, plus a pass in Physics, with the O’level requirements also met.
- Registered Nurse (RN) or Registered Midwife (RM) qualification plus five (5) O’level credit passes in English Language, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, and Biology, for candidates upgrading from the nursing profession.

Key Points for UNIMAID Nursing Science Candidates
UTME applicants need the same five subjects twice over. Mathematics, Chemistry, Biology, Physics and English Language at SSCE credit level, then English Language, Physics, Chemistry and Biology in JAMB. A score of at least 160 makes you eligible for screening.
The A Level Direct Entry route is specific. Two passes in Biology or Zoology and Chemistry are required, together with a pass in Physics, and the O’Level requirements still have to be met in full. A Levels do not replace the SSCE credits here.
Practising nurses upgrading into the degree follow the second route. An RN or RM qualification is accepted alongside the same five O’Level credit passes. Candidates on this path should have their registration certificate and result slips ready at screening.
