Entry Requirements
O’Level Subject Combination
The O’level subject combination and requirements needed to study Philosophy include the following:
- Five (5) SSCE credit passes in Government or History, English Language, and three (3) other subjects. A pass in Mathematics is required.
Only two of the five credits are pinned down. English Language is compulsory and you need either Government or History, leaving three slots open. Mathematics is treated separately, and a pass is enough.
JAMB UTME Subject Combination
Candidates will write the following Four (4) Subjects in JAMB.
- English Language.
- Government and any other two (2) subjects
Government is the one fixed choice at UTME level. History is accepted at O Level as an alternative, but it does not stand in for Government here, so register it alongside English Language.
Direct Entry Requirement
These are the conditions you need to fulfill to gain Direct Entry admission to study Philosophy if you don’t intend to use UTME. You require;
- Two (2) ‘A’ Level passes, including Government or History
Special Consideration (Waiver) Remarks
UNN accepts two (2) ‘A’ Level passes plus the UTME requirements.
That waiver is worth reading twice. Advanced passes do not cancel the O Level list, so Direct Entry candidates are assessed on both, and one pass must still be Government or History.
JAMB Score
All candidates interested in getting admitted into UNN for the 2026/2027 session should know that to be eligible for the screening, you must have a score of a minimum of 160 or above in your JAMB result.
Government Is the Subject That Decides UNN Philosophy
Across all three routes, Government is the subject that keeps appearing. It anchors the O Level list as an alternative to History, it is the only named subject in the JAMB combination, and it satisfies the Direct Entry condition.
The rest is manageable. Five credits including English Language, a pass in Mathematics, four JAMB subjects and a score of at least 160 will put you in front of the screening panel for Philosophy.
