Economics and Development Studies is taught under the Faculty of Social & Management Science at Federal University Gashua. Economics is required on all three routes and never has an alternative.
Mathematics is named at the first two stages but drops out at Direct Entry, where Economics plus any Arts or Social Science subject is enough.

WAEC/NECO Subject Combination
The WAEC/NECO subject combination and requirements needed to study Economics and Development Studies is Five (5) SSCE credits in Mathematics, Economics, English Language, and two other Social Sciences/Art subjects.
JAMB Subject Combination
In UTME, please note that the English Language is Compulsory for this course.

Direct Entry Requirement
These are the conditions you need to fulfill to gain Direct Entry admission to study Economics and Development Studies if you don’t intend to use UTME.
You require;
Two (2) ‘A’ Level/NCE passes in Economics and one other Art/Social science subject.
JAMB Score
All candidates interested in getting admitted into FUGASHUA for the 2026/2027 session should know that to be eligible for the screening, you must have scored a minimum of 180 and above in your JAMB result.
Mathematics Drops Out at Direct Entry for FUGASHUA Economics and Development Studies
The O’Level requirement is five SSCE credits in Mathematics, Economics, English Language and two other Social Science or Arts subjects. Three papers are named outright.
The UTME combination keeps the same core. English Language is compulsory, Mathematics and Economics are fixed, and one more subject is chosen from a named list.
That list covers Government, History, Geography, Literature in English, French, and CRK or IRK, which gives most arts and social science candidates a workable option.
Direct Entry is the lightest condition, asking for two ‘A’ Level or NCE passes in Economics and one other Arts or Social Science subject.
A JAMB score of 180 and above is the screening threshold for the 2026/2027 session at FUGASHUA and applies whichever route a candidate uses.
