Mathematics is taught under the Faculty of Science at Federal University Gashua (FUGASHUA). Physics sits beside Mathematics at every stage, which is heavier than most mathematics departments require.
Further Mathematics is accepted as the fifth O’Level credit, and Agricultural Science is accepted there too. Both widen the secondary school stage noticeably.

WAEC/NECO Subject Combination
The WAEC/NECO subject combination and requirements needed to study Mathematics is Five (5) SSCE credits in English Language, Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics and any other Science subject from Further Mathematics and Biology or Agricultural Science.
JAMB Subject Combination
In UTME, please note that the English Language is Compulsory for this course.
Therefore, the three (3) other JAMB UTME subject combinations needed to study Mathematics at FUGASHUA include Physics, Mathematics and Chemistry or Biology.
Direct Entry Requirement
These are the conditions you need to fulfil to gain Direct Entry admission to study Mathematics if you do not intend to use UTME.
You require two (2) ‘A’ Level/NCE passes in
Physics and Mathematics or Chemistry.
JAMB Score
All candidates interested in getting admitted into FUGASHUA for the 2026/2027 session should know that to be eligible for the screening, you must have scored a minimum of 180 and above in your JAMB result.
Physics Accompanies Mathematics at Every FUGASHUA Stage
The O’Level requirement is five SSCE credits in English Language, Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics, plus one more from Further Mathematics, Biology or Agricultural Science.
Chemistry is compulsory at that stage but becomes an alternative to Biology at UTME, so a candidate still needs the credit while having a choice of examination paper.
The UTME combination keeps English Language compulsory, fixes Physics and Mathematics, and allows Chemistry or Biology in the third place.
Direct Entry asks for two ‘A’ Level or NCE passes in Physics and either Mathematics or Chemistry. Physics appears on all three routes without exception.
A JAMB score of 180 and above is the screening threshold for the 2026/2027 session at FUGASHUA and applies whichever route a candidate uses.
