Islamic Studies is taught under the Faculty of Arts and Humanities at Federal University, Gashua (FUGASHUA). Arabic is accepted in place of the Islamic Studies paper, but only at O’Level.
From the UTME stage onwards the Islamic Studies paper is named with no alternative. Candidates who took Arabic instead should plan to sit Islamic Studies at JAMB.
Confirm that Islamic Studies appears on the current FUGASHUA course list and that your JAMB registration records it correctly before you sit the examination.

WAEC/NECO Subject Combination
The WAEC/NECO subject combination and requirements needed to study Islamic Studies are Five (5) SSCE credits in English Language, Islamic Studies or Arabic and any three relevant subjects.
JAMB Subject Combination
In UTME, please note that the English Language is Compulsory for this course.
Therefore, the three (3) other JAMB UTME subject combinations needed to study Islamic Studies at FUGASHUA include Islamic Studies together with two other Arts subjects.
Direct Entry Requirement
These are the conditions you need to fulfil to gain Direct Entry admission to study Islamic Studies if you do not intend to use UTME.
You require two (2) ‘A’ Level/NCE passes which should include Islamic Studies.
JAMB Score
All candidates interested in getting admitted into FUGASHUA for the 2026/2027 session should know that to be eligible for the screening, you must have scored a minimum of 180 and above in your JAMB result.
Arabic Counts Once Only at FUGASHUA Islamic Studies
The O’Level requirement is five SSCE credits in English Language, Islamic Studies or Arabic, and any three relevant subjects. Relevance is not defined for those three.
That leaves the secondary school stage reasonably open, since a candidate may complete the set with subjects from several different fields.
The UTME combination removes the Arabic option. English Language is compulsory, Islamic Studies is fixed, and the two remaining papers must be Arts subjects.
Direct Entry is the shortest condition here, asking for two ‘A’ Level or NCE passes which should include Islamic Studies. Arabic is not mentioned at that level either.
A JAMB score of 180 and above is the screening threshold for the 2026/2027 session at FUGASHUA and applies whichever route a candidate uses.
