All five O’Level subjects are named, so none of them is optional. Mathematics, English Language, Physics, Chemistry and Biology must each be held at credit level.
Chemistry and Biology are the two that carry into the UTME without qualification, while Mathematics and Physics share the remaining place. MAUTECH screens at 180 in JAMB.

Admission Requirements for Biotechnology
WAEC/NECO Subject Combination
The WAEC/NECO subject combination and requirements needed to study Biotechnology is Five (5) SSCE credits in Mathematics, English Language, Physics, Chemistry, and Biology.
With every subject specified there is no flexible credit, so a strong grade outside the list cannot make up for a weak one inside it.
JAMB Subject Combination
In UTME, please note that the English Language is Compulsory for this course.
Therefore, the three (3) other JAMB UTME subject combinations needed to study Biotechnology under the Faculty of Sciences at MAUTECH include;
Chemistry, Biology, and one other subject chosen from Mathematics or Physics.
Both options for that third place are already required O’Level credits, so the choice costs you nothing. Write whichever of Mathematics or Physics you score more highly in.
Direct Entry Requirement
These are the conditions you need to fulfill to gain Direct Entry admission to study Biotechnology if you don’t intend to use UTME.
You require;
Two (2) ‘A’ Level/NCE passes in Biology/Botany/Zoology and Chemistry or Physics.
This is the only route where Chemistry is not compulsory, since Physics may be presented in its place. Botany and Zoology also appear here and nowhere else on the page.
JAMB Score
All candidates interested in getting admitted into MAUTECH for the 2026/2027 session should know that to be eligible for the screening, you must have scored a minimum of 180 and above in your JAMB result.
Physics Can Replace Chemistry Only at MAUTECH Biotechnology Direct Entry
Chemistry is compulsory as an O’Level credit and as a UTME subject. The single exception is the Direct Entry condition, which accepts Physics in its place beside Biology, Botany or Zoology.
UTME candidates have one choice of their own, between Mathematics and Physics for the third JAMB subject, and both are required credits anyway.
Secure the five named credits first, then treat the 180 JAMB score as the threshold that makes you eligible for the MAUTECH screening.
