Admission Requirements for Economics
WAEC/NECO Subject Combination
The WAEC/NECO subject combination and requirements needed to study Economics is Five (5) SSCE credits in English Language, Mathematics, Economics, and any two Arts or Social Science subjects.
JAMB Subject Combination
In UTME, please note that the English Language is Compulsory for this course.
Therefore, the three (3) other JAMB UTME subject combinations needed to study Economics at SSU include Economics, Mathematics, and any in Government, History, Geography, Lit-in-English, French, or CRK/IRK.
Direct Entry Requirement
These are the conditions you need to fulfill to gain Direct Entry admission to study Economics if you do not intend to use UTME.
You require two (2) ‘A’ Level/NCE passes in Economics and any in Mathematics, Statistics, Geography, Physics, Chemistry, Agric Science, Accounting, Business Management, History, or Government.
JAMB Score
All candidates interested in getting admitted into SSU for the 2026/2027 session should know that to be eligible for the screening, you must have scored a minimum of 180 and above in your JAMB result.
How Wide the SSU Economics Subject Lists Really Are
The O’Level requirement is five SSCE credits in English Language, Mathematics and Economics, plus any two Arts or Social Science subjects. Three papers are named and two are left to the candidate.
The UTME combination keeps English Language compulsory, fixes Economics and Mathematics, and then offers a choice for the third subject. Government, History, Geography, Literature in English, French and CRK or IRK are all accepted.
Direct Entry is the widest route of the three. Economics is required, and the second ‘A’ Level or NCE pass may come from Mathematics, Statistics, Geography, Physics, Chemistry, Agric Science, Accounting, Business Management, History or Government.
That list is worth noting because it accepts science subjects, which the UTME combination does not. A candidate with a science background has a realistic route in through Direct Entry.
