This is to inform the general public and all aspiring students of the University of Benin (UNIBEN) that the admission requirements for the Department of Education & Political Science have been published.
The sections below cover the O’Level credit passes, three separate Benin waiver remarks, the four subjects sat in JAMB UTME, two Direct Entry routes, and the JAMB score required.
Government or History is the subject that anchors the course. Either one satisfies the O’Level condition, heads the UTME combination and appears in both Direct Entry routes.
Three waiver remarks sit beside the general conditions on this page, one for each stage, and each tightens what Benin will accept.

Entry Requirements
O’Level Subject Combination
The O’level subject combination and requirements needed to study Education & Political Science include the following:
- Five SSCE credit passes or equivalent to include English Language, Government/ History, and 3 other subjects.
Special Consideration (Waiver) Remarks
- UNIBEN requires an ‘O’ level credit in Mathematics, and any Social Science subject.
That Mathematics credit is the detail to note. The general O’Level line above leaves three of the five subjects open, while Benin fills one of them with Mathematics and expects a social science subject as well.
JAMB UTME Subject Combination
Candidates will write the following Four (4) Subjects in JAMB
- English Language
- Government or History plus 2 other Arts or Social Science subjects
Special Consideration (Waiver) Remarks
- UNIBEN accepts one Social Science subject and any other subject.
Direct Entry Requirement
These are the conditions you need to fulfil to gain Direct Entry admission to study Education and Political Science if you don’t intend to use UTME. You require;
- Two ‘A’ level passes in relevant subjects chosen from Government or History, Economics, and Geography/Physics.
- NCE merit pass in Govt./History, Economics, and Geography/Physics.
Special Consideration (Waiver) Remarks
- UNIBEN requires 2/3 NCE merit passes, including Government/History, plus 3/2 O/Level passes, including English Language and Mathematics, in one sitting.
This third waiver governs the NCE route and adds a one sitting condition the general list does not mention. The O’Level passes supporting an NCE application have to come from a single sitting.
JAMB Score
All candidates interested in getting admitted into UNIBEN for the 2026/2027 session should know that you must have scored 200 or above in your JAMB result to be eligible for the screening.
Three Waivers Shape the UNIBEN Political Science Education Entry
Work through the waivers rather than the general lines. At O’Level, Benin adds a Mathematics credit and a social science subject. At UTME, it accepts one social science subject and any other subject alongside Government or History.
The Direct Entry waiver is the strictest. NCE candidates need two or three merit passes including Government or History, supported by three or two O’Level passes with English Language and Mathematics, all from one sitting.
A Level candidates have a simpler route, needing two passes from Government or History, Economics, and Geography or Physics. UTME candidates must reach the Benin screening threshold of 200 in JAMB.
