Fine and Applied Arts is offered at the University Of Nigeria (UNN), Nsukka. This page covers the O’Level subjects, two UNN waiver remarks, the UTME subject combination, the Direct Entry routes and the JAMB score required.
Fine Arts and English Language are the two subjects named at every stage. Around them the department recognises a long list of technical college subjects for NTC and NBC holders.
The waiver remarks add a condition the main list does not mention, so read them before assuming a portfolio of art subjects alone will satisfy Nsukka.
The admission requirements include O’level Subject combinations, JAMB UTME Subject combinations, and School and Departmental Cut-Off Marks.

The subject combination and requirements needed to study Fine Art / Fine and Applied Arts include credit passes in English Language and Fine Arts.

Special Consideration (Waiver) Remarks
- UNN requires five O’ Level credit passes in Fine and Applied Arts, English Language, and one Science subject.
- Candidates with NBC/NTC must have five (5) ‘O’ Level credit passes which must include the English Language, Painting and Decorating, Technical Drawing, and a Science subject.
Both waiver remarks require a science subject, which the opening O’Level line does not mention at all. Candidates working only from that first sentence will fall short, so treat the waivers as the governing conditions.
JAMB Subject Combination
In UTME, please note that the English Language is Compulsory.
Therefore, the three other JAMB UTME subject combinations needed to study Fine and Applied Arts include Fine Arts and two other Arts or Social Science subjects.
Direct Entry Requirement
These are the conditions you need to fulfil to gain Direct Entry admission to study Fine Art / Fine and Applied Arts if you don’t intend to use UTME. You require;
- Two (2) ‘A’ level passes in Arts or Fine Arts and any other subject.
- ND, upper credit HND, lower credit from recognized institutions.

A Science Credit Catches Out UNN Fine Arts Applicants
Both UNN waiver remarks require a science subject among the five O’Level credits, which is easy to miss on an arts course. Candidates who dropped the sciences entirely at senior secondary level should check this first.
NTC and NBC holders have a wide set of recognised subjects, running from General Woodwork and Technical Drawing through Decorative Painting, Spinning, Weaving, Surface Design and Printing to Graphic Design and Ceramics.
In UTME you sit English Language, Fine Arts and two other arts or social science subjects, with a JAMB score of at least 200 required for screening. Direct Entry accepts two A Level passes or an ND or HND from a recognised institution.
