The University of Benin. offers Mechanical Engineering under its Faculty of Engineering, Environment & Technology, and this page sets out the O’Level credits, the JAMB UTME combination and two Direct Entry routes.
Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry are written in full in the UTME and are all required as O’Level credits. Together with English Language they account for four of the five credits.
Direct Entry is the one place where the three sciences are not all demanded at once. Candidates applying that way need two A Level passes drawn from Chemistry, Physics and Mathematics.

O’Level Subject Combination
The O’level subject combination and requirements needed to study Mechanical Engineering;
You require;
Five (5) SSCE credit passes to include Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, English Language, and any other Science subject.
Four subjects are named and the fifth is restricted to the sciences, so there is no place for an arts or commercial credit anywhere in this list. Biology and Further Mathematics are the common choices.
JAMB Subject Combination
In UTME, please note that the English Language is Compulsory for this course.
Therefore, the three (3) other JAMB UTME subject combinations needed to study Mechanical Engineering under the Faculty of Engineering, Environment & Technology at UNIBEN include;
Mathematics, Physics, and Chemistry
No alternatives are offered. All three are already required as O’Level credits, so your UTME preparation covers the same subjects you had to pass at secondary school.
Direct Entry Requirements
These are the conditions you need to fulfil to gain Direct Entry admission to study Mechanical Engineering if you don’t intend to use UTME.
You require;
- Two (2) ‘A’ level passes from Chemistry, Physics, and Mathematics.
- ND upper credit, NCE technical, and HND in Mech. Engineering.
JAMB Score
All candidates interested in getting admitted into UNIBEN for the 2026/2027 session should know that to be eligible for the screening, you must have scored 200 or above in your JAMB result.
Direct Entry Needs Only Two of the Three Sciences at UNIBEN Mechanical Engineering
UTME candidates write Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry without exception. Direct Entry candidates choose two of those three at A Level, which is the only relaxation anywhere in this requirement.
The O’Level list stays strict for everyone, naming four subjects and confining the fifth credit to the sciences. Technical candidates can instead use an ND at upper credit, an NCE technical or an HND in Mechanical Engineering.
A JAMB score of 200 or above is required before UNIBEN will screen you, so treat that figure as the first target rather than the subject list.
