The University of Benin (UNIBEN) has published the entry requirements for its Department of Political Science, covering the O’Level credits, the JAMB UTME combination, Direct Entry and the JAMB score needed for screening.
Government and History are treated as one subject throughout. Either satisfies the O’Level credit, either satisfies the UTME requirement, and either counts among the two A Level passes for Direct Entry.
Mathematics appears once, and only at pass level. It is not one of the five credits, but the department still expects to see a pass in it.

Entry Requirements
O’Level Subject Combination
The O’level subject combination and requirements needed to study Political Science include the following:
- Five SSCE credit passes in Government or History, English Language, and three other subjects. At least a pass in Mathematics is required
Two credits are named and three are left open, which is generous by UNIBEN standards. The Mathematics condition sits outside that count, since a pass does not qualify as one of the five.
JAMB UTME Subject Combination
Candidates will write the following Four (4) Subjects in JAMB
- English Language
- Government or History plus two other Social Science/Arts subjects
The two accompanying UTME subjects must come from the Social Sciences or the Arts. Choosing subjects you also hold as O’Level credits keeps a single body of revision serving both stages.
Direct Entry Requirement
These are the conditions you need to fulfil to gain Direct Entry admission to study Political Science if you don’t intend to use UTME. You require;
- Two ‘A’ level passes, including Government or History.
JAMB Score
All candidates interested in getting admitted into UNIBEN for the 2026/2027 session should know that to be eligible for the screening, you must have scored 200 or above in your JAMB result.
Government and History Are Interchangeable at Every Stage of UNIBEN Political Science
Candidates often assume Government is the required subject for this course. The department accepts History equally, at O’Level, in the UTME and in the Direct Entry condition.
With only English Language named beside it, three of the five credits are yours to choose, which makes this one of the more accessible requirements in the faculty.
Do not overlook the Mathematics pass, and remember that UNIBEN screens at 200 in JAMB rather than the 180 used by many other federal universities.
