The University of Benin (UNIBEN) has published the entry requirements for its Department of Theatre Arts, covering the O’Level credits, a waiver remark, the JAMB UTME combination and Direct Entry.
The general O’Level line asks only for English Language and Arts subjects. The waiver below it is more specific, naming Literature in English and one further Arts subject.
Direct Entry takes a different view altogether, accepting A Level passes from the Arts, the Social Sciences or the Sciences. That is a wider door than most arts departments open.

Entry Requirements
O’Level Subject Combination
The O’level subject combination and requirements needed to study Theatre Arts include the following:
- Five (5) SSCE credit passes to include English Language and Arts subjects.
Special Consideration (Waiver) Remarks
- UNIBEN requires Literature in English and one Arts subject.
This remark gives the vague phrase above a definite shape. Literature in English becomes a named credit, one further Arts subject joins it, and the remaining two credits are left open.
JAMB UTME Subject Combination
Candidates will write the following Four (4) Subjects in JAMB
- English Language
- Literature in English and two (2) other relevant subjects
Literature in English carries over from the waiver into the UTME, making it the one subject required at both stages beside English Language itself.
Direct Entry Requirement
These are the conditions you need to fulfil to gain Direct Entry admission to study Theatre Arts if you don’t intend to use UTME. You require;
- Two (2) ‘A’ level passes in Arts, Social Sciences or Science subjects
No field is excluded here, and Literature in English is not required at A Level. A science candidate can enter Theatre Arts by this route without having studied an arts subject beyond O’Level.
JAMB Score
All candidates interested in getting admitted into UNIBEN for the 2026/2027 session should know that you must have scored 200 or above in your JAMB result to be eligible for the screening.
Direct Entry Accepts Even Science Subjects at UNIBEN Theatre Arts
For an arts department this is a notably open condition. Two A Level passes from the Arts, the Social Sciences or the Sciences will do, with no subject named.
UTME candidates face a tighter brief. The waiver makes Literature in English a named O’Level credit, and it is written again in JAMB with two further relevant subjects.
Whichever route you take, a JAMB score of 200 or above is what makes you eligible for the UNIBEN screening.
