Admission requirements for the Department of Adult Education at the University of Calabar have been published. They cover the O’Level credits, the JAMB UTME papers, two Direct Entry routes and the JAMB score.
Adult Education has one of the broadest subject lists at UNICAL. Eleven subjects are named as acceptable fillers for the three open O’Level places, spanning languages, religion, the social sciences and Physics.
A TC II is also accepted in place of the five credits, which opens the department to candidates from a teacher training background.
Entry Requirements
O’Level Subject Combination
The O’level subject combination and requirements needed to study Adult Education include the following: Five (5) SSCE credit passes in the following subjects:
- English Language
- Mathematics and three (3) subjects below:
- Literature in English
- History
- French
- Yoruba
- Igbo
- Hausa
- Christian Religious Studies
- Islamic Studies
- Geography/Physics
- Economics and Government or TC II with a pass in English Language and four (4) other subjects
JAMB UTME Subject Combination
Candidates will write the following Four (4) Subjects in JAMB
- English Language
- Government/History, one (1) Social Science subject, and any other subject
Direct Entry Requirement For Adult Education
Below is the Direct Entry Requirement for Adult Education:
- Two (2) ‘A’ level passes.
- NCE merit in two (2) subjects.

About the University of Calabar

Two Different Ways to Meet the UNICAL Adult Education O Level Rule
The first route is five SSCE credit passes including English Language and Mathematics, with three more drawn from the long list of languages, humanities and social science subjects.
Nigerian languages count towards that list. Yoruba, Igbo and Hausa all qualify, as do French, Literature in English, History, Christian Religious Studies and Islamic Studies.
The second route accepts a TC II with a pass in English Language and four other subjects, which is a lower bar than five credits.
The JAMB combination asks for English Language, Government or History, one Social Science subject and any other subject.
Direct Entry takes two A level passes or an NCE merit in two subjects, with no named subjects in either case. The UNICAL JAMB threshold is 150 and above.
