The Department of Microbiology at the University of Calabar has published the conditions applicants must satisfy, covering the five O’level credits required, the UTME subject combination, the direct entry alternative and the JAMB score the university works to.

Microbiology at UNICAL asks for a full science profile at O’level. Every one of the five credits is named, so unlike several other departments there is no open slot to fill with whatever subject you happen to hold.
The UTME list is slightly more forgiving, and the direct entry route is narrower than most. Each of these is set out below, with a note on what the wording actually commits you to.
The admission requirements include O’level Subject combinations, JAMB UTME Subject combinations, and School and Departmental Cut-Off Marks.

Entry Requirements
O’Level Subject Combination
The O’level subject combination and requirements needed to study Microbiology include the following: Five (5) SSCE credit passes in the following subjects:
- English Language
- Mathematics
- Chemistry
- Biology
- Physics
All five are compulsory. A pass grade in any of them is not a credit, so check the grades on your statement of result rather than assuming a sat and passed subject counts towards the combination.
JAMB UTME Subject Combination
Candidates will write the following Four (4) Subjects in JAMB
- English Language
- Biology
- Chemistry
- Physics or Mathematics
Three papers are fixed and the fourth gives you a choice between Physics and Mathematics. Both are accepted equally, so the decision should rest on which of the two you perform better in.
Direct Entry Requirement For Microbiology
Below is the Direct Entry Requirement for Microbiology:
- Two (2) ‘A’ level passes in Chemistry and any one (1) from Biology, Zoology, or Botany.
Chemistry is not optional on this route. The second pass can come from Biology, Zoology or Botany, but an applicant without A level Chemistry does not meet the direct entry condition for this department.
JAMB Score
For any candidate to be admitted to any Department in the University of Calabar, the Candidate must score 150 and above in JAMB.
This figure covers every department in the university rather than Microbiology specifically. It sets the point at which your application is considered, not the point at which a place is secured.
How UNICAL Microbiology Applicants Should Weigh These Requirements
The O’level list is the strictest part of this set. Five credits in English Language, Mathematics, Chemistry, Biology and Physics are all required, with no substitutions available anywhere in the combination.
After that, settle your UTME papers around the Physics or Mathematics choice, and aim comfortably above the 150 JAMB mark rather than at it, since selection into the department is competitive.
Entry conditions at UNICAL can change between admission cycles, so confirm the current subject lists and score with the department or the university portal before you register.
