The Department of Food Science & Technology at the Federal University of Technology Owerri (FUTO) has published its entry requirements, setting out the O’level credits needed, the UTME subjects, the direct entry route and the JAMB score that qualifies you for screening.

Food Science and Technology is a laboratory heavy programme, and the subject conditions reflect that. Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics appear at O’level alongside English Language, with the fifth credit left open to any other science subject.
There are two ways in. Candidates sitting the UTME follow the score and subject rules below, while holders of A level passes or an upper credit ND or HND can apply through direct entry instead.
The admission requirements include O’level Subject combinations, JAMB UTME Subject combinations, and School and Departmental Cut-Off Marks.
Entry Requirements
O’Level Subject Combination
The O’level subject combination and requirements needed to study Food Science & Technology include Five SSCE credits in the following subjects:
- Physics
- Chemistry
- Mathematics
- English Language and any other Science subject
Four subjects are named and the fifth is open to any other science subject, which in practice usually means Biology or Agricultural Science. Credits are required throughout, so an ordinary pass will not count.
JAMB UTME Subject Combination
Candidates will write the following subjects in JAMB
- English Language
- Mathematics
- Chemistry
- Physics
- Biology
Five subjects appear in this list while JAMB registration takes four papers. Because the department has not stated which of them is optional, confirm the exact combination against the current JAMB brochure or with FUTO before you register.

Direct Entry Requirement
These are the conditions you need to fulfill to gain Direct Entry admission to study Food Science and Technology if you don’t intend to use UTME. You require;
- ‘A’ level passes in two of Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics
- ND/HND (upper credit) in relevant fields
These are two separate routes rather than a single combined condition. A candidate with the A level passes qualifies, and so does one holding an upper credit ND or HND in a relevant field.
JAMB Score
All candidates interested in getting admitted to the Federal University of Technology, Owerri, for the 2026/2027 session should know that to be eligible for the screening, you must have scored 160 or above in your JAMB result.
160 marks the eligibility line for screening. Admission itself follows the screening exercise, so candidates close to the threshold should plan on the screening carrying most of the weight.

Before You Choose FUTO Food Science and Technology
The settled parts of this application are the O’level credits and the score. You need five SSCE credits including Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics and English Language, plus a JAMB result of 160 or above to reach screening.
The direct entry route is equally clear. Two A level passes from Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics will do, as will an upper credit ND or HND in a related field.
The UTME subject list is the one point to verify directly with FUTO, since five subjects are listed where JAMB registration takes four. Check it before registration rather than after.
