This article is designed to help students who wish to study Fine and Applied Arts under the Faculty of Engineering, Environment & Technology in the University of Jos.
Confirm that Fine and Applied Arts is still listed at UNIJOS before you register for JAMB. The department accepts technical certificate subjects towards the O Level credits, which is unusual and worth planning around.
What became the University of Jos was established in November 1971 from the elite campus of the University of Ibadan. The first students were admitted in January 1972 as pre-degree students, and the first Bachelor of Arts degree program began in October 1973.
In October 1975, the military government under General Murtala Mohammed established the Unijos as a separate institution. The first Vice-Chancellor of the Unijos was Professor Gilbert Onuaguluchi.
Classes began at the newly reorganized University of Jos in October 1976, with 575 students spreading over the existing four faculties of Arts and Social Sciences, Education, Natural Sciences, and Medical Sciences.
Post-graduate programs were added in 1977. By 1978 Faculties of Law and Environmental Sciences were established, and the Faculties of Arts and Social Sciences were separated.
In 2003, the Carnegie Corporation of New York gave Unijos a $2 million grant to form its own fundraising department.
O’Level Subject Combination
The O’level subject combination and requirements needed to study Fine and Applied Arts;
You Require
- Five (5) SSC passes to include English Language, Mathematics, Fine Arts, and two (2) other social science subjects. Mathematics, Arts, and one Social Science subject.
- For NTC, the other two (2) relevant subjects could be from any of the following: Decorative Painting; Spray Painting, Lining, Sign and Design; Wall Handling, Colour Mixing/Matching, and Glazing; Graphic Painting; Ceramics; Basic Electricity; Building/Engineering Drawing.
The second clause is there for National Technical Certificate holders. Decorative Painting, Ceramics, Graphic Painting and Building or Engineering Drawing all count towards the two optional subjects.
English Language, Mathematics and Fine Arts remain the named requirements in either case, so those three are the grades to secure first.

Direct Entry offers two routes. A Level passes in Fine Arts or Technical Drawing plus one of a long list running from Mathematics to Chemistry, or an ND or HND at credit in Fine Arts.
