This article is designed to help students who wish to study Music under the Faculty of Arts & Humanities in the University of Jos.
Confirm that Music is still listed at UNIJOS before you register for JAMB. The general O Level line and the UNIJOS waiver name different subjects, so it pays to know which one the university applies.
What became the University of Jos was established in November 1971 from the elite campus of the University of Ibadan.
The first students were admitted in January 1972 as pre-degree students, and the first Bachelor of Arts degree program began in October 1973. In October 1975, the military government under General Murtala Mohammed established the Unijos as a separate institution.
The first Vice-Chancellor of the Unijos was Professor Gilbert Onuaguluchi. Classes began at the newly reorganized University of Jos in October 1976, with 575 students spreading over the existing four faculties of Arts and Social Sciences, Education, Natural Sciences, and Medical Sciences.
Post-graduate programs were added in 1977. By 1978 Faculties of Law and Environmental Sciences were established, and the Faculties of Arts and Social Sciences were separated.
In 2003, the Carnegie Corporation of New York gave Unijos a $2 million grant to form its own fundraising department.

The O’level subject combination and requirements needed to study Music;
You require;
Five (5) SSCE credit passes, including Music and English Language.
Special Consideration (Waiver) Remarks
- UNIJOS requires five (5) ‘O’ Level credit passes to include English Language, Literature in English, and any Arts/Social Science subjects at not more than two (2) sittings.
The general line asks for Music and English Language among the five credits. The UNIJOS waiver names Literature in English instead, with the remaining credits drawn from the Arts or Social Sciences.
The waiver also sets a sitting limit of two, which the general line does not mention and which many candidates overlook.
JAMB Subject Combination
In UTME, please note that English Language is Compulsory for this course. Therefore, the three (3) other JAMB UTME subject combinations needed to study Music under the Faculty of Arts & Humanities at UNIJOS include;
Music, one (1) other Arts subject plus any other subject.
On the JAMB form Music returns as a required paper. English Language is compulsory, one further Arts subject is needed, and the fourth paper is open.

These are the conditions you need to fulfill to gain Direct Entry admission to study Music if you don’t intend to use UTME.
You Require
Two (2) ‘A’ level passes to include Music.
- UNIJOS accepts MUSIC majors in relevant programme such as Theatre Arts, ND MUSIC credit or NCE credit/merit in Music Education credit/merit, IJMB ‘A’ Level in Music in addition to UTME requirements.
Direct Entry is broad for this department. A Theatre Arts programme with a Music major, an ND in Music at credit, an NCE in Music Education or an IJMB A Level in Music are all accepted.
Each of those carries the UTME requirements with it, so the O Level credits still have to be in place.
JAMB Score
All candidates interested in getting admitted into UNIJOS for the 2026/2027 session, should know that to be eligible for the screening, you must have a score of a minimum of 180 and above in your JAMB result.
Music or Literature in English for UNIJOS Music Applicants
Two O Level lists sit in this post. The general one names Music and English Language, while the UNIJOS waiver names English Language and Literature in English with a two sitting limit.
Music itself is compulsory on the JAMB form and runs through every Direct Entry route, so it matters regardless of which credit list applies. Confirm your JAMB score reaches 180 for the 2026/2027 session.
