This article sets out what Mathematics asks for under the Faculty of Sciences at the University of Jos, covering the O Level credits, the UTME papers, the two Direct Entry routes and the minimum score.
Confirm the course is still listed at UNIJOS before you register for JAMB. Mathematics is compulsory at every stage, so the real question is how many other subjects have to sit beside it.
In October 1975, the then military government under General Murtala Mohammed established the Unijos as a separate institution.

What became the University of Jos was established in November 1971 from the elite campus of the University of Ibadan. The first students were admitted in January 1972 as pre-degree students, and the first Bachelor of Arts degree program began in October 1973.
The first Vice-Chancellor of the Unijos was Professor Gilbert Onuaguluchi. Classes began at the newly reorganized University of Jos in October 1976, with 575 students spreading over the existing four faculties of Arts and Social Sciences, Education, Natural Sciences, and Medical Sciences.
Post-graduate programs were added in 1977. By 1978 Faculties of Law and Environmental Sciences were established, and the Faculties of Arts and Social Sciences were separated.
In 2003, the Carnegie Corporation of New York gave Unijos a $2 million grant to form its own fundraising department.
O’Level Subject Combination
The O’level subject combination and requirements needed to study Mathematics;
You Require
Five (5) SSC credit passes, including English Language, Mathematics, and Physics or Chemistry.
Only three places are pinned down, and the third is a straight choice between Physics and Chemistry. The last two credits carry no stated restriction at all.
JAMB Subject Combination
In UTME, please note that English Language is Compulsory for this course. Therefore, the three (3) other JAMB UTME subject combinations needed to study Mathematics under the Faculty of Sciences at UNIJOS include;
Mathematics and any two (2) of Physics, Chemistry, and Economics or Geography.
The JAMB form asks for more. Mathematics joins the compulsory English Language and two further papers are needed, drawn from a list that adds Economics and Geography to the two sciences.

Direct Entry Requirement
These are the conditions you need to fulfill to gain Direct Entry admission to study Mathematics if you don’t intend to use UTME.
You Require
- Two (2) ‘A’ level passes in Mathematics and any other science subject.
- NCE merit in Mathematics and one (1) in Physics, Chemistry, or Economics
The two Direct Entry routes do not ask the same thing. The A Level route requires a second science subject, while the NCE route names Physics, Chemistry or Economics.
Economics is therefore acceptable on one route and not the other, a small difference that decides which path suits a commercial student.
JAMB Score
All candidates interested in getting admitted into UNIJOS for the 2026/2027 session should know that to be eligible for the screening, you must have a minimum score of 180 and above in your JAMB result.
How Much Science UNIJOS Mathematics Asks For at Each Stage
Mathematics is the constant here, required among the credits, on the JAMB form and on both Direct Entry routes. Nothing about this application works without it.
A single credit in Physics or Chemistry satisfies O Level, while the UTME combination needs two further papers and allows Economics and Geography. Plan for at least two sciences and clear 180 in JAMB for the 2026/2027 session.
