This article is designed to help students who wish to study Mechanical Engineering under the Faculty of Engineering, Environment & Technology at the University of Jos.
Confirm that Mechanical Engineering is still listed at UNIJOS before you register for JAMB. The waiver here adds a sixth named subject that the main O Level line does not mention.
What became the University of Jos was established in November 1971 from the elite campus of the University of Ibadan.
The first students were admitted in January 1972 as pre-degree students, and the first Bachelor of Arts degree program began in October 1973. In October 1975, the military government under General Murtala Mohammed established the Unijos as a separate institution.
The first Vice-Chancellor of the Unijos was Professor Gilbert Onuaguluchi. Classes began at the newly reorganized University of Jos in October 1976, with 575 students spreading over the existing four faculties of Arts and Social Sciences, Education, Natural Sciences, and Medical Sciences. Post-graduate programs were added in 1977.
By 1978 Faculties of Law and Environmental Sciences were established, and the Faculties of Arts and Social Sciences were separated.
In 2003, the Carnegie Corporation of New York gave Unijos a $2 million grant to form its own fundraising department.
O’Level Subject Combination
The O’level subject combination and requirements needed to study Mechanical Engineering;
You Require
Five (5) SSC credit passes to include Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, English Language, and any other Science subject.
Four credits are named and the fifth must be another science subject. Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics and English Language fill the first four places with no substitution.
Special Consideration (Waiver) Remarks
- UNIJOS requires an ‘O’ Level credit pass in Further Mathematics.
The waiver settles what that fifth science should be. A credit in Further Mathematics is required at UNIJOS, so the open place on the list is effectively filled for you.
Candidates whose school did not offer Further Mathematics will need to address that before applying, since no alternative is named.
JAMB Subject Combination
In UTME, please note that English Language is Compulsory for this course. Therefore, the three (3) other JAMB UTME subject combinations needed to study Mechanical Engineering under the Faculty of Engineering, Environment & Technology at UNIJOS include;
Mathematics, Physics, and Chemistry
The JAMB combination repeats three of the compulsory credits with English Language as the fourth paper. Further Mathematics is not sat in JAMB despite being a required credit.

These are the conditions you need to fulfill to gain Direct Entry admission to study Mechanical Engineering if you don’t intend to use UTME.
You Require
(i) Two (2) ‘A’ level passes from Chemistry, Physics, and Mathematics.
(ii) ND upper credit, NCE technical, and HND in Mech. Engineering.
Direct Entry offers a subject route and a technical route. Two A Level passes from Chemistry, Physics and Mathematics, or an ND at upper credit, an NCE technical or an HND in Mechanical Engineering.
JAMB Score
All candidates interested in getting admitted into UNIJOS for the 2026/2027 session should know that to be eligible for the screening, you must have a score of a minimum of 180 and above in your JAMB result.
The Further Mathematics Credit UNIJOS Mechanical Engineering Requires
Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics run through the credits, the JAMB papers and the A Level route, which is what you would expect from an engineering programme.
The detail specific to UNIJOS is the Further Mathematics credit required by the waiver. It never appears on the JAMB form, so check it on your result, then make sure your score reaches 180 for the 2026/2027 session.
