What became the University of Jos was established in November 1971 from the elite campus of the University of Ibadan. The first students were admitted in January 1972 as pre-degree students, and the first Bachelor of Arts degree program began in October 1973.

In October 1975, the military government under General Murtala Mohammed established the Unijos as a separate institution. The first Vice-Chancellor of the Unijos was Professor Gilbert Onuaguluchi.

Classes began at the newly reorganized University of Jos in October 1976, with 575 students spreading over the existing four faculties of Arts and Social Sciences, Education, Natural Sciences, and Medical Sciences.

Post-graduate programs were added in 1977. By 1978 Faculties of Law and Environmental Sciences were established, and the Faculties of Arts and Social Sciences were separated.

In 2003, the Carnegie Corporation of New York gave Unijos a $2 million grant to form its own fundraising department.

O’Level Subject Combination

The O’level subject combination and requirements needed to study Medicine and Surgery;

You Require

Five (5) SSCE credit passes in English Language, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Biology.

All five credits are specified. Mathematics is the only one that does not carry over to the JAMB combination, which makes it the easiest to overlook when checking a result.

JAMB Subject Combination

In UTME, please note that English Language is Compulsory for this course. Therefore, the three (3) other JAMB UTME subject combinations needed to study Medicine and Surgery under the Faculty of Medical, Pharmaceutical & Health Sciences at UNIJOS include;

Physics, Chemistry, and Biology.

The four JAMB papers are fixed at English Language, Physics, Chemistry and Biology. No alternative combination exists for this course.

Direct Entry Requirement

These are the conditions you need to fulfill to gain Direct Entry admission to study Medicine and Surgery if you do not intend to use UTME.

  • ‘A’ Level passes in Physics, Chemistry, and Biology or Zoology in addition to the UTME requirements.
  • BSC, BOS, etc., in the relevant programme.

Two Direct Entry routes are listed. A Level passes in Physics, Chemistry and Biology or Zoology, or a first degree in a relevant programme.

The A Level route carries the UTME requirements with it, so the five O Level credits are still checked alongside those passes.

JAMB Score

All candidates interested in getting admitted into UNIJOS for the 2026/2027 session, should know that to be eligible for the screening, you must have a score of a minimum of  180 and above in your JAMB result.

What UNIJOS Medicine and Surgery Leaves to the Candidate

The honest answer is almost nothing. Five named credits, four fixed JAMB papers and a short Direct Entry list leave no subject choices anywhere in the application.

Mathematics is the one requirement that sits only on your result sheet, never on the JAMB form, so check it before anything else. Then confirm your score reaches 180 for the 2026/2027 session.
