This article is designed to help students who wish to study Microbiology under the Faculty of Sciences at the University of Jos.
Confirm that Microbiology is still listed at UNIJOS before you register for JAMB. All five O Level credits are named here, and the department also recognises its own remedial programme as a route in.

What became the University of Jos was established in November 1971 from the elite campus of the University of Ibadan.
The first students were admitted in January 1972 as pre-degree students, and the first Bachelor of Arts degree program began in October 1973.
In October 1975, the military government under General Murtala Mohammed established the Unijos as a separate institution. The first Vice-Chancellor of the Unijos was Professor Gilbert Onuaguluchi.
Classes began at the newly reorganized University of Jos in October 1976, with 575 students spreading over the existing four faculties of Arts and Social Sciences, Education, Natural Sciences, and Medical Sciences.
Post-graduate programs were added in 1977. By 1978 Faculties of Law and Environmental Sciences were established, and the Faculties of Arts and Social Sciences were separated.
In 2003, the Carnegie Corporation of New York gave Unijos a $2 million grant to form its own fundraising department.
O’Level Subject Combination
The O’level subject combination and requirements needed to study Microbiology;
You Require
Five (5) SSC credit passes in English Language, Mathematics, Chemistry, Biology, and Physics.
Every credit is specified, so nothing on this list is optional. Both Physics and Mathematics are required even though the JAMB combination asks for only one of the two.
Special Consideration (Waiver) Remarks
(iv) UNIJOS accepts candidates with a pass at the Remedial Science Programme of the University of UNIJos.
The waiver adds a route rather than relaxing a subject. A pass in the university remedial science programme is accepted, which gives candidates who fell short a second path into the department.
JAMB Subject Combination
In UTME, please note that English Language is Compulsory for this course. Therefore, the three (3) other JAMB UTME subject combinations needed to study Microbiology under the Faculty of Sciences at UNIJOS include;
Biology, Chemistry, and either Physics or Mathematics.
The JAMB form allows one substitution. Biology and Chemistry are fixed beside the compulsory English Language, and the fourth paper is either Physics or Mathematics.
Direct Entry Requirement
These are the conditions you need to fulfill to gain Direct Entry admission to study Microbiology if you don’t intend to use UTME.
You require;
Two (2) ‘A’ level passes in Chemistry and any one (1) from Biology, Zoology, or Botany.
Direct Entry keeps Chemistry compulsory and accepts Zoology or Botany in place of Biology. Neither of those appears earlier in the post, so this is the widest of the three lists.

JAMB Score
All candidates interested in getting admitted into UNIJOS for the 2026/2027 session, should know that to be eligible for the screening, you must have a score of a minimum of 180 and above in your JAMB result.
The Remedial Science Route Into UNIJOS Microbiology
Chemistry and Biology are required at every stage, with English Language, Mathematics and Physics completing the five named credits. That credit list is the strictest part of the application.
The waiver is worth noting because it accepts a pass at the university remedial science programme, which is not a subject condition at all. Otherwise clear 180 in JAMB for the 2026/2027 session.
