This is to notify the general public and all aspiring students of the University of Maiduguri (UNIMAID) that the Department of Business Education admission requirements has been published.
The sections below cover the O’Level and technical certificate passes, the four subjects sat in JAMB UTME, the Maiduguri waiver on those subjects, the Direct Entry routes, and the JAMB score needed for screening.
Business Education accepts a wider range of certificates than most courses here. TC II merit passes and NTC or NBC credit passes count alongside the usual O’Level credits, which suits candidates from technical and business colleges.
English Language, Mathematics and Economics are the three fixed subjects, with two more drawn from the social sciences or the arts. The waiver below adjusts that list, so read it before settling your UTME registration.
Entry Requirements
O’Level Subject Combination
The O’level subject combination and requirements needed to study Business Education include the following:
Five (5) TC II merit, ‘O’ Level or NTC/NBC credit passes, including English Language, Mathematics, Economics, and two (2) other subjects in the Social Sciences or Arts.
For NBC candidates, those other subjects could be any of the following: Commerce, Office Practice, Principles of Accounts, Secretarial Duties, Typewriting, and Shorthand.
JAMB UTME Subject Combination
Candidates will write the following Four (4) Subjects in JAMB.
- English Language
- Mathematics
- Economics plus one (1) of Literature in English, History, Government, Geography, Chemistry, and Physics.
Special Requirement (Waiver) Remarks
UNIMAID requires Mathematics, any Economics/Principles of Accounts/Commerce, and any Literature in English, History, Government, Geography, Chemistry, and Physics.
This waiver is the version Maiduguri applies, and it is more generous than the general line above. Where that line fixes Economics, the department will also accept Principles of Accounts or Commerce in the same slot.
Direct Entry Requirement
These are the conditions you need to fulfil to gain Direct Entry admission to study Business Education if you don’t intend to use UTME. You require;
- Two (2) ‘A’ Level passes or NCE merit in two (2) relevant subjects.
- NCE merit in Business Education Double Major.

Business Certificates That Count at UNIMAID
Candidates holding NBC or NTC certificates should check the named subject list closely. Commerce, Office Practice, Principles of Accounts, Secretarial Duties, Typewriting and Shorthand all count toward the five passes required.
For UTME, register English Language and Mathematics, then Economics, Principles of Accounts or Commerce, and one of Literature in English, History, Government, Geography, Chemistry or Physics. A JAMB score of at least 160 covers eligibility for screening.
Direct Entry takes two A Level passes or an NCE at merit in two relevant subjects. An NCE merit in Business Education Double Major is listed separately and is the most direct route for college of education graduates.
