Fisheries is grouped with the agricultural sciences, which is why Biology and Agricultural Science are treated as interchangeable throughout. Chemistry, Mathematics and English Language make up the rest of the fixed O’Level credits.

The Direct Entry list is one of the widest on the UNIMAID course list, running from Botany and Zoology through to Geology and Economics. That breadth is worth noting if your A Levels are not a conventional science pairing.

Entry Requirements

O’Level Subject Combination

The O’level subject combination and requirements needed to study Fisheries include the following:

Five SSCE credit passes in Biology/Agricultural Science, Chemistry, Mathematics, and English plus any other Science subject.

JAMB UTME Subject Combination

Candidates will write the following Four (4) Subjects in JAMB.

  • English Language
  • Chemistry
  • Biology/Agricultural Science and any other Science subject

Special Consideration (Waiver) Remarks

UNIMAID requires Chemistry, Biology/Agriculture, and either Physics or Mathematics.

Use this waiver when you register. The general line leaves the fourth subject open as any other science subject, while Maiduguri narrows it to Physics or Mathematics, with Chemistry and Biology or Agriculture fixed alongside English Language.

Direct Entry Requirement

These are the conditions you need to fulfil to gain Direct Entry admission to study Fisheries if you don’t intend to use UTME. You require;

  • Two (2) ‘A’ Level passes in any of Chemistry, Biology, Botany, Zoology, Agricultural Science, Geography, Mathematics (pure & applied), Physics, Geology, and Economics.
  • NCE Agriculture

Special Consideration (Waiver) Remarks

UNIMAID accepts ND/NCE/HND and any other equivalent qualification.

This second waiver widens the Direct Entry list rather than limiting it. The general conditions name A Level passes and an NCE in Agriculture, while the waiver adds a National Diploma, an HND or an equivalent qualification.

JAMB Score

All candidates interested in getting admitted into UNIMAID for the 2026/2027 session should know that to be eligible for the screening, you must have a score of a minimum of 160 or above in your JAMB result.

About the University of Maiduguri

The University of Maiduguri (UNIMAID) is a Federal higher education institution in Maiduguri, Borno State’s capital city in northeast Nigeria.

The federal government of Nigeria established the university in 1975 with the goal of it becoming one of the country’s primary higher-education institutions.

With a large student and staff population, the University of Maiduguri admits students from all over Nigeria, regardless of race, culture, or religion.

Working Out Your Entry Route for UNIMAID Fisheries

School leavers need five SSCE credit passes covering Biology or Agricultural Science, Chemistry, Mathematics, English Language and one more science subject. In UTME, follow the waiver and register Chemistry, Biology or Agriculture, and either Physics or Mathematics.

A Level candidates have ten subjects to draw their two passes from, including Geography, Geology and Economics as well as the core sciences. An NCE in Agriculture is listed separately and does not require A Levels alongside it.

Diploma holders should keep the second waiver in mind, since it brings the ND and HND into scope. UTME applicants still need a JAMB score of at least 160, and every candidate should check the departmental cut-off for the session.
