This is to notify the general public and all aspiring students of the University of Maiduguri (UNIMAID) that the Department of English Language admission requirements has been published.

The sections below cover the O’Level credit passes, the four subjects sat in JAMB UTME, the Maiduguri waiver on those subjects, the A Level route into Direct Entry, and the JAMB score needed for screening.
Literature in English is the subject that defines this department. It is required among the five O’Level credit passes, named in the UTME combination, repeated in the waiver and required again at A Level for Direct Entry.
Candidates often arrive with a strong English Language credit and nothing else from the arts. That is not enough here, because English Language is the compulsory subject every applicant sits rather than the one that marks you out for this course.
Entry Requirements
O’Level Subject Combination
The O’level subject combination and requirements needed to study English Language include the following:
Five (5) SSCE credit passes to include Literature in English, English Language, and three other Arts or Social Science subjects.
JAMB UTME Subject Combination
Candidates will write the following Four (4) Subjects in JAMB.
- English Language
- Literature in English, one other Arts subject, and another Art or Social Science subject
Special Consideration (Waiver) Remarks
UNIMAID requires Literature in English and any other two (2) subjects.
This waiver loosens the general UTME line. Where the standard condition asks for one arts subject and one arts or social science subject, Maiduguri accepts any two subjects alongside Literature in English and the compulsory English Language.
Direct Entry Requirement
These are the conditions you need to fulfil to gain Direct Entry admission to study English Language if you don’t intend to use UTME. You require;
Two (2) ‘A’ level passes to include Literature in English and one (1) other Arts subject.

About the University of Maiduguri
The University of Maiduguri (UNIMAID) is a Federal higher education institution in Maiduguri, Borno State’s capital city in northeast Nigeria.
The federal government of Nigeria established the university in 1975 with the goal of it becoming one of the country’s primary higher-education institutions.
With a large student and staff population, the University of Maiduguri admits students from all over Nigeria, regardless of race, culture, or religion.
Literature in English Is the Gate for UNIMAID English
At O’Level you need five credit passes covering Literature in English, English Language and three other arts or social science subjects. There is no waiver relaxing that list, so all five must come from the named groups.
At UTME the department is more relaxed than the general line suggests. Register English Language and Literature in English, then any two further subjects, following the Maiduguri waiver rather than the arts and social science restriction.
Direct Entry needs two A Level passes, Literature in English plus one other arts subject. UTME candidates need a JAMB score of at least 160 for eligibility, with the departmental cut-off for the session worth checking before you apply.
