This is to notify the general public and all aspiring students of the University of Maiduguri (UNIMAID) that the Department of Kanuri admission requirements has been published.

The requirements below cover the O’Level credit passes, the four subjects sat in JAMB UTME, the two A Level routes into Direct Entry, and the JAMB score that makes a Kanuri application eligible for screening at Maiduguri.
Kanuri is taught as a language and literature course, which is why Literature in English runs through the conditions. It is required among the five SSCE credit passes and again as a UTME subject alongside the compulsory English Language.
The remaining UTME subjects are drawn from the arts and the social sciences, so candidates from a humanities background will usually find they already meet the combination without having to resit anything.
Entry Requirements
O’Level Subject Combination
The O’level subject combination and requirements needed to study Kanuri include the following:
Five (5) SSCE credit passes to include English Language and Literature in English.
JAMB UTME Subject Combination
Candidates will write the following Four (4) Subjects in JAMB.
- English Language
- Literature in English and any other two (2) subjects in Arts and the Social Sciences
Direct Entry Requirement
These are the conditions you need to fulfil to gain Direct Entry admission to study Kanuri if you don’t intend to use UTME. You require;
- Two (2) ‘A’ level passes to include Literature in English
- Two ‘A’ level passes in Arts Subjects
The two lines above are alternatives rather than a single combined condition. The first names Literature in English as one of the passes, while the second accepts any two arts subjects, so a candidate needs to satisfy one of them, not both.

About the University of Maiduguri
The University of Maiduguri (UNIMAID) is a Federal higher education institution in Maiduguri, Borno State’s capital city in northeast Nigeria.
The federal government of Nigeria established the university in 1975 with the goal of it becoming one of the country’s primary higher-education institutions.
With a large student and staff population, the University of Maiduguri admits students from all over Nigeria, regardless of race, culture, or religion.
What Decides a UNIMAID Kanuri Admission
For UTME candidates the conditions are straightforward. Five SSCE credit passes including English Language and Literature in English, a UTME combination of English Language, Literature in English and two arts or social science subjects, and a JAMB score of at least 160.
Direct Entry applicants choose between the two A Level routes set out above. Candidates who already hold Literature in English at A Level have the stronger case, since that subject appears in every other part of the department conditions.
One point often missed is that Literature in English is required at O’Level too, not only in UTME. A candidate with five strong credits that exclude Literature in English will not meet the Kanuri requirement and should plan a resit before applying.
