This is to inform the general public that the management of the University Of Nigeria (UNN), Nsukka has published the admission requirements for its Department of Biochemistry, covering the UTME route and two separate Direct Entry routes.
Set out below are the five O Level credits the department names, the four subjects to enter on your JAMB form, both Direct Entry conditions and the score UNN requires before a candidate is invited for screening.
About UNN
The University of Nigeria was the first indigenous university in Nigeria to attain full-fledged and autonomous status. It was modelled after the American educational system. It is the first land-grant university in Africa and one of Nigeria’s five most reputed universities.
The University has 102 academic departments in 15 Faculties and offers 82 undergraduate and 211 postgraduate programs.
O’Level Subject Combination
The O’level subject combination and requirements needed to study Biochemistry are five SSCE (5) credit passes in English Language, Chemistry, Mathematics, Physics, and Biology.
All five credits are named, so there is no free choice at this stage. The full science combination plus English Language is the starting point.
JAMB Subject Combination
In UTME, please note that the English Language is Compulsory for this course.
Therefore, the three (3) other JAMB UTME subject combinations needed to study Biochemistry under the Faculty of Sciences include Biology, Chemistry, and Physics or Mathematics.
Biology and Chemistry carry over unchanged. The fourth paper is a choice between Physics and Mathematics, both already required O Level credits, so neither is an extra subject.

Direct Entry Requirement
You need the following to gain Direct Entry admission to study Biochemistry if you don’t intend to use UTME:
- Two (2) ‘A’ level passes chosen from Chemistry, Mathematics, Physics, and Biology.
- NCE/ND/HND in related programs plus the UTME requirements.
Read that second line carefully. The diploma is not offered instead of the UTME conditions but in addition to them, so a holder of an NCE, ND or HND still has to satisfy everything already set out above.
JAMB Score
All candidates interested in getting admitted into UNN for the 2026/2027 session should know that to be eligible for the screening, you must have a minimum score of 200 or above in your JAMB result.
The Diploma Route Does Not Replace the UTME Requirements
The two Direct Entry lines work very differently. The first is a genuine alternative, asking for two A Level passes drawn from Chemistry, Mathematics, Physics and Biology, and nothing more.
The second is cumulative. An NCE, ND or HND in a related programme counts only alongside the UTME requirements, which means the five named O Level credits and a score of at least 200 for the 2026/2027 session still apply.
