This is to inform the general public that the management of the University Of Nigeria (UNN), Nsukka, has published the admission requirements for her Department of Education and Social Science aspirants.
Education and Social Science is an umbrella listing rather than a single course, and the page sets out a separate O Level combination for each of the four specialisations beneath it. Below are the general requirements, those four combinations, the Direct Entry routes and the score UNN asks for.
About UNN
The University of Nigeria was the first indigenous university in Nigeria to attain full-fledged and autonomous status. It was modeled after the American educational system. It is the first land-grant university in Africa and one of Nigeria’s five most reputed universities.
The University has 102 academic departments in 15 Faculties and offers 82 undergraduate and 211 postgraduate programs.
O’Level Subject Combination
The O’level subject combination and requirements needed to study Education and Social Science are five SSCE (5) credit passes and should include English Language and Mathematics.
Only two credits are named here. English Language and Mathematics are compulsory and the other three are unrestricted, but the waiver section below gives a combination specific to each specialisation.
JAMB Subject Combination
In UTME, please note that the English Language is Compulsory for this course.
Therefore, the three (3) other JAMB UTME subject combinations needed to study Education and Social Science include any three Social Science Subjects.
The UTME combination is the same for every specialisation. English Language is compulsory and the other three papers can be any Social Science subjects.
Special Consideration (Waiver) Remarks
- For Education/Geography: Geography, English Language, and two other subjects.
- For Education/Political Science: Government, English Language, and two other subjects.
- For Education/Economics: English Language, Economics, Mathematics, and any other Social Science subject.
- For Education/Social Studies: English Language and three other Social Science/Arts subjects.
Each line applies to one specialisation only, so read the one you are applying for and ignore the rest. Note that Mathematics is named in the general requirement above but appears in only the Economics combination here, so hold it in any case and treat the general line as the one to satisfy.

You need the following to gain Direct Entry admission to study Education and Social Science if you don’t intend to use UTME:
- NCE in two relevant subjects.
- Two ‘A’ level passes in relevant subjects.
Direct Entry names no subjects, leaving relevance to the department to judge.
JAMB Score
All candidates interested in getting admitted into UNN for the 2026/2027 session should know that to be eligible for the screening, you must have a minimum score of 200 or above in your JAMB result.
Four Specialisations, Four Different Combinations
The waiver section is the part that matters most, because it is where the four specialisations stop sharing requirements. Each names a different anchor subject, and only the Economics combination repeats Mathematics.
English Language appears in all four and in the general requirement, so it is the one credit no candidate can do without. Decide your specialisation first, work back from its combination, and score at least 200 for the 2026/2027 session.
