Medicine & Surgery at the University of Nigeria (UNN) applies the strictest O Level condition on the whole admissions table. It is not the subject list that catches candidates out but the way those credits must be obtained.
All five credits must come from a single sitting. Combining results from two exam attempts is accepted on many UNN courses, but it is not accepted here, and that rules out a great many otherwise strong applicants.

Entry Requirements
O’Level Subject Combination
The O’level subject combination and requirements needed to study Medicine & Surgery include the following:
- Five (5) SSCE credit passes in English Language, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, and Biology.
Special Consideration (Waiver) Remarks
UNN requirements should be at one (1) sitting.
This single line carries more weight than the subject list above it. A candidate holding all five credits across two sittings does not meet the requirement, however good the individual grades are.
JAMB UTME Subject Combination
Candidates will write the following Four (4) Subjects in JAMB.
- English Language
- Physics
- Chemistry
- Biology
The JAMB combination repeats the three sciences and leaves out Mathematics, which is still needed as an O Level credit. English Language, Physics, Chemistry and Biology account for all four subjects.
Direct Entry Requirement
These are the conditions you need to fulfil to gain Direct Entry admission to study Medicine and Surgery if you don’t intend to use UTME. You require;
- ‘A’ Level passes in Physics, Chemistry, and Biology or Zoology in addition to the UTME requirements.
Note the phrase about meeting the UTME requirements as well. Direct Entry does not release you from the O Level condition, so the single sitting rule applies to candidates on this route too.
JAMB Score
All candidates interested in getting admitted into UNN for the 2026/2027 session should know that to be eligible for the screening, you must have a minimum of 160 or above score in your JAMB result.
One Sitting Is the Condition That Decides This Application
The subject requirements for UNN Medicine & Surgery are predictable. English Language, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Biology at O Level, with the three sciences carried into the JAMB combination and the Direct Entry passes.
The condition that actually separates candidates is the sitting rule. All five credits must come from one attempt, and that applies on the Direct Entry route as well. A JAMB score of 160 then takes you to screening.
