Physics at the University of Nigeria (UNN) asks for a rigid science profile, with Physics and Mathematics required at every stage. This page sets out the O Level credits, the JAMB combination and the Direct Entry routes.
There is one point of flexibility worth noting early. The fifth O Level credit may come from Further Mathematics, Biology or Agricultural Science, which gives candidates from agricultural science backgrounds a way in.

Entry Requirements
O’Level Subject Combination
The O’level subject combination and requirements needed to study Physics include the following:
Five (5) SSCE credit passes in English Language, Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, and any other Science subject from Further Mathematics and Biology or Agricultural Science
Four of the five credits are named outright: English Language, Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics. Only the fifth is open, and even that must come from the short science list above.
JAMB UTME Subject Combination
Candidates will write the following Four (4) Subjects in JAMB.
- English Language.
- Physics
- Mathematics
- Chemistry or Biology
The JAMB list differs from the O Level one in a useful way. Chemistry is compulsory among your O Level credits, but at UTME you may substitute Biology for it.
Direct Entry Requirement
These are the conditions you need to fulfill to gain Direct Entry admission to study Physics if you don’t intend to use UTME. You require;
- NCE/Two (2) ‘A’ level passes in Physics and Mathematics or Chemistry.
Special Consideration (Waiver) Remarks
UNN accepts:
- NCE Physics or ND or HND in Physics or Engineering.
- Two (2) ‘A’ level passes in Physics and Mathematics plus the UTME requirements.
The waiver widens the Direct Entry door. An ND or HND in Physics or Engineering is accepted alongside the NCE and A Level routes, which recognises candidates arriving from polytechnic programmes.
JAMB Score
All candidates interested in getting admitted into UNN for the 2026/2027 session should know that to be eligible for the screening, you must have a minimum of 160 or above score in your JAMB result.
Where Biology Can Stand In for Chemistry at UNN Physics
Physics and Mathematics are immovable on this course, appearing in the O Level credits, the JAMB combination and both Direct Entry routes. The subject that moves is Chemistry, which Biology may replace at UTME though not at O Level.
Plan on that basis. Secure credits in English Language, Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics with a fifth science, register four JAMB subjects accordingly, and score at least 160 to be eligible for UNN screening.
