This is to notify the general public and all aspiring University of Nigeria (UNN) students that the Department of Political Science admission requirements has been published.
The admission requirements include O’level Subject combinations, JAMB UTME Subject combinations, and School and Departmental Cut-Off Marks.

Entry Requirements
O’Level Subject Combination
The O’level subject combination and requirements needed to study Political Science include the following:
- Five (5) SSCE credit passes in Government or History, English Language, and three (3) other subjects. A pass in Mathematics is required.
Special Consideration (Waiver) Remarks
UNN requires ‘O’ Level credit pass in Government and any 2 other subjects with at least ‘O’ Level pass in Mathematics. Does not accept History in lieu of Government.
Read that waiver carefully. The general rule mentions Government or History, but UNN names Government specifically at O level and will not take History in its place, so a History credit alone will not satisfy this department.
JAMB UTME Subject Combination
Candidates will write the following Four (4) Subjects in JAMB.
- English Language.
- Government or History plus two (2) other Social Science/Arts subjects.
Mathematics does not appear in the JAMB combination, but an O level pass in it is still required, so it cannot be skipped entirely.
Direct Entry Requirement
These are the conditions you need to fulfill to gain Direct Entry admission to study Political Science if you don’t intend to use UTME. You require;
- Two (2) ‘A’ Level passes, including Government or History.
JAMB Score
All candidates interested in getting admitted into UNN for the 2026/2027 session should know that to be eligible for the screening, you must have a minimum of 160 or above score in your JAMB result.
Why UNN Insists on Government Rather Than History
The subject rules tighten as you move through this application. At O level UNN wants a credit pass in Government plus two other subjects, with at least an O level pass in Mathematics, and it will not accept History in place of Government.
The JAMB stage is more relaxed, taking English Language with Government or History and two other Social Science or Arts subjects. Direct Entry asks for two A level passes including Government or History, and the minimum JAMB score is 160.
