Theatre & Film Studies at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) draws candidates from the arts, the social sciences and even engineering. The requirement lists below are correspondingly broad, but they contain one detail that catches applicants out.
That detail is the science credit in the UNN waiver. A course of this kind is not where most candidates expect to need one, so check the O Level section below before assuming an all arts result will do.

Entry Requirements
O’Level Subject Combination
The O’level subject combination and requirements needed to study Theatre & Film Studies include the following:
Five (5) SSCE credit passes to include English Language and Arts subjects.
Special Requirement (Waiver) Remarks
UNN requires five (5) ‘O’ Level credit passes in subjects including English language, Literature in English, and one Science subject.
The two O Level statements pull in different directions. The general line asks for English Language and arts subjects, while the UNN waiver names Literature in English and requires one science credit. The waiver is the UNN specific instruction, so plan around it.
JAMB UTME Subject Combination
Candidates will write the following Four (4) Subjects in JAMB.
- English Language.
- Literature in English and two (2) other relevant subjects.
Literature in English carries over from the waiver into the JAMB combination, where it is the only named subject besides English Language. The remaining two slots are left to your judgement.
Direct Entry Requirement
These are the conditions you need to fulfil to gain Direct Entry admission to study Theatre And Film Studies if you don’t intend to use UTME. You require;
Two (2) ‘A’ level passes in Arts, Social Sciences, or Science subjects.
Special Requirement (Waiver) Remarks
UNN accepts:
- ND/NCE either in Theatre Arts or any other relevant subjects or ‘A’ Level pass in Literature in English.
- ND in Mass Communication, Fine and Applied Arts, Electrical/Elect. Engineering, Music, Management, and other relevant programs, plus the UTME requirements.
JAMB Score
All candidates interested in getting admitted into UNN for the 2026/2027 session should know that to be eligible for the screening, you must have a minimum of 160 or above score in your JAMB result.
The Science Credit Hiding in an Arts Course
Theatre & Film Studies looks like a pure arts admission until you read the UNN waiver, which asks for one science credit among your five O Level passes. That single line is the requirement most candidates overlook.
Everything else is accommodating. Literature in English anchors both the O Level and JAMB lists, Direct Entry accepts diplomas from several unrelated fields, and a JAMB score of 160 is enough to reach screening.
