Medical Laboratory Technology at the University of Nigeria (UNN) is a full science admission, and the department names every subject it wants. The lists below cover O Level, UTME, Direct Entry and the score you need for screening.
One quirk is worth noticing before you read on. Mathematics is a required O Level credit for this course, yet it does not appear anywhere in the JAMB combination or the Direct Entry list.

About The University of Nigeria
The University of Nigeria, commonly referred to as UNN, is a federal university in Nsukka, Enugu State, Nigeria.
Founded by Nnamdi Azikiwe in 1955 and formally opened on 7 October 1960, the University of Nigeria has four campuses – Nsukka, Enugu, and Ituku-Ozalla – all located in Enugu State and Aba campus in Abia State.
The University of Nigeria was the first full-fledged indigenous and first autonomous university in Nigeria modelled upon the American educational system. It is the first land-grant university in Africa and one of Nigeria’s five most reputed universities.
Entry Requirements
O’Level Subject Combination
The O’level subject combination and requirements needed to study Medical Laboratory Technology/Science include the following:
- Five (5) SSCE credit passes in English Language, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, and Biology.
All five credits are named, so there is no free slot to fill. Physics, Chemistry and Biology form the science core, and English Language and Mathematics complete the set as the general requirements.
JAMB UTME Subject Combination
Candidates will write the following Four (4) Subjects in JAMB.
- English Language.
- Biology
- Physics
- Chemistry
The JAMB list takes the three sciences straight from the O Level requirement and drops Mathematics. You still need the Mathematics credit, but you will not be examined in it at UTME for this course.
Direct Entry Requirement
These are the conditions you need to fulfil to gain Direct Entry admission to study Medical Laboratory Technology/Science if you don’t intend to use UTME. You require;
- ‘A’ level passes to include Physics, Chemistry and Biology or Zoology.
Direct Entry keeps the same three sciences and adds one concession. Zoology is accepted in place of Biology, which recognises candidates whose advanced study specialised in animal biology rather than the general subject.
JAMB Score
All candidates interested in getting admitted into UNN for the 2026/2027 session should know that to be eligible for the screening, you must have a minimum of 160 or above score in your JAMB result.
Mathematics Counts at O Level but Not at UTME
The three sciences do the work on this course. Physics, Chemistry and Biology appear in the O Level credits, the JAMB combination and the Direct Entry passes, with Zoology accepted for Biology at the last of these.
Mathematics is the subject that behaves differently. It is required as an O Level credit and then disappears from every later list, so secure it early and register the sciences for JAMB. A score of 160 reaches screening.
