The Department of Architecture at the Federal University of Technology Owerri (FUTO) has published its entry requirements, covering the O’level credits accepted, the UTME subject combination, two direct entry routes and the JAMB score needed for screening.

Architecture draws on drawing, construction and calculation in roughly equal measure, and the O’level list reflects that. Fine Art, Technical Drawing, Graphics Design and a long run of building trade subjects all count towards the fifth credit.
What stays fixed is the technical core. English Language, Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry are required at O’level, and Physics and Mathematics carry into the UTME alongside English Language.
Direct entry offers two separate paths, one through A level passes and one through an upper credit ND or HND. Both appear below in the department’s own wording.
The admission requirements include O’level Subject combinations, JAMB UTME Subject combinations, and School and Departmental Cut-Off Marks.
Entry Requirements
O’Level Subject Combination
The O’level subject combination and requirements needed to study Architecture include Five SSCE credits in the following subjects:
- English Language
- Mathematics
- Physics
- Chemistry and any one subject from below:
- Fine Art
- Geography or Wood Work
- Biology
- Economics
- Technical Drawing
- Further Mathematics
- Introduction to Building Construction
- Bricklaying/Block laying
- Concreting
- Wall, Floors, and Ceiling Finishing
- Joinery
- Carpentary
- Decorative Painting
- Lining, Sign, and Design
- Wall Hanging
- Color Mixing/Matching and Glazing
- Ceramics
- Graphics Design
- Graphic Printing
- Basic Electricity
One credit from that list completes the five, and every option on it carries equal weight. Candidates from technical colleges often qualify on a subject they assumed would not count.
JAMB UTME Subject Combination
Candidates will write the following Four (4) Subjects in JAMB
- English Language
- Physics
- Mathematics, and any of Chemistry, Geography, Art, Biology, and Economics.
Three papers are compulsory and the fourth comes from five options. The trade subjects accepted at O’level have no place in the UTME, so the two lists need reading separately.
Direct Entry Requirement
These are the conditions you need to fulfill to gain Direct Entry admission to study Architecture if you don’t intend to use UTME. You require;
- Two (2) ‘A’ level passes chosen from Mathematics or Physics and Chemistry, Geography or Fine Arts
- ND/HND upper credits in relevant field
The two bullets are alternatives. An upper credit ND or HND in a relevant field qualifies on its own, without the A level passes set out in the first.

JAMB Score
All candidates interested in getting admitted to the Federal University of Technology, Owerri, for the 2026/2027 session should know that to be eligible for the screening, you must have scored 160 or above in your JAMB result.
160 is the threshold for screening rather than for admission. Architecture is a popular choice, so candidates near the line should expect the screening to decide the outcome.

Art and Trade Subjects in FUTO Architecture Admission
The breadth of the O’level list is this department’s most useful feature. Ceramics, Joinery, Graphics Design and Basic Electricity all count towards the fifth credit alongside Fine Art and Technical Drawing.
The UTME is tighter. English Language, Physics and Mathematics are compulsory, with one further paper from Chemistry, Geography, Art, Biology or Economics.
Add a JAMB score of 160 or above, and confirm the current subject lists with FUTO before registering, since the department revises them between admission cycles.
