The Department of Bio-Medical Technology at the Federal University of Technology Owerri (FUTO) has published its entry requirements, covering the O’level credits, the UTME subject combination, the direct entry route and the JAMB score needed for screening.
Bio-Medical Technology sits where engineering meets the life sciences, and its entry list is accordingly strict. All five O’level credits are named, and all four UTME papers are fixed.
Mathematics marks the one difference between the two lists. It is required at O’level but does not appear in the UTME combination, where Physics, Chemistry and Biology take the three science slots.
Direct entry is the only place with any choice in it, and that section is reproduced below along with the rest.
The admission requirements include O’level Subject combinations, JAMB UTME Subject combinations, and School and Departmental Cut-Off Marks.
Entry Requirements
O’Level Subject Combination
The O’level subject combination and requirements needed to study Bio-medical Technology include Five SSCE credits in the following subjects:
- English Language
- Mathematics
- Physics
- Chemistry
- Biology
Every subject is named and nothing is optional. A pass grade will not do in any of the five, so check the grades on your statement of result rather than the subject list alone.
JAMB UTME Subject Combination
Candidates will write the following Four (4) Subjects in JAMB
- English Language
- Physics
- Chemistry
- Biology
These four are compulsory. Candidates who assume Mathematics belongs here because it appears at O’level will have registered the wrong combination.
Direct Entry Requirement
These are the conditions you need to fulfill to gain Direct Entry admission to study Bio-medical Technology if you don’t intend to use UTME. You require;
- Two (2) ‘A’ level passes in Chemistry and any one of Physics, Biology/ Zoology/Botany, and Mathematics.
Chemistry is compulsory on this route, with the second pass drawn from Physics, Biology, Zoology, Botany or Mathematics. The O’level credits above continue to apply.
JAMB Score
All candidates interested in getting admitted to the Federal University of Technology, Owerri, for the 2026/2027 session should know that to be eligible for the screening, you must have scored 160 or above in your JAMB result.
That figure qualifies you for screening and nothing further. The screening exercise is where places are allocated, so treat the JAMB score as an entry condition rather than a result.
