O’Level Subject Combination
The O’level subject combination and requirements needed to study History; You require;
Five (5) SSCE credit passes to include History and English Language.
Two credits are named and three are entirely open. Unlike most OAU departments, there is no restriction placed on those three, so commercial or even science subjects can be used to make up the five.
Jamb Subject Combination
In UTME, the English Language is compulsory for this course. The three (3) other JAMB UTME subjects needed to study History under the Faculty of Arts & Humanities at OAU are listed below.
History and any other two subjects from Arts and Social Sciences.
The JAMB stage is where a limit appears. History remains compulsory, and the two subjects beside it must now come from the arts or social sciences rather than any subject at all.
Direct Entry Requirement
These are the conditions you need to fulfil to gain Direct Entry admission to study History if you don’t intend to use UTME. You require;
Two (2) ‘A’ level passes in History and other related subjects.
Direct Entry keeps History at the centre and describes the second pass only as related. The department does not publish a list of accepted subjects here, so candidates are judged on how close their second subject sits to History.
Jamb Score
All candidates interested in getting admitted into OAU for the 2026/2027 session should know that to be eligible for the screening, you must have scored 200 or above in your JAMB result.
Only Two Named Subjects Across the Whole Page
History and English Language are the only subjects OAU names for this course. History appears in all three requirement sets, and English Language is required at O Level and compulsory at UTME as it is everywhere.
Everything else is left to your judgement, within the arts and social sciences at UTME. Secure the two named credits, build the other three freely, and score 200 or above in JAMB to reach screening.
