Microbiology at the University of Nigeria (UNN) asks for a complete science result at O Level and then relaxes slightly at UTME. The waiver notes here confirm the main lists rather than altering them.
Chemistry is the subject to watch. It appears in every requirement on this page, including both Direct Entry options, and it is the one subject for which no alternative is offered anywhere.

Entry Requirements
O’Level Subject Combination
The O’level subject combination and requirements needed to study Microbiology include the following:
- Five (5) SSCE credit passes in English Language, Mathematics, Chemistry, Biology, and Physics.
Special Consideration (Waiver) Remarks
UNN requires O’level credit passes in English Language, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, and Mathematics.
This waiver lists the same five subjects as the requirement above it, in a different order. Unlike many UNN courses, there is no conflict to resolve and no extra concession on offer.
JAMB UTME Subject Combination
Candidates will write the following Four (4) Subjects in JAMB.
- English Language.
- Biology
- Chemistry
- Physics or Mathematics
The JAMB stage is where the requirement eases. Physics and Mathematics are both compulsory credits at O Level, but at UTME you register only one of them beside Biology and Chemistry.
Direct Entry Requirement
These are the conditions you need to fulfil to gain Direct Entry admission to study Microbiology if you don’t intend to use UTME. You require;
- Two (2) ‘A’ level passes in Chemistry and any one (1) from Biology, Zoology, or Botany.
Special Consideration (Waiver) Remarks
UNN accepts passes at Higher School Certificate or GCE A/L in Chemistry and Biology, Chemistry and Zoology, or Chemistry and Botany in addition to the UTME entry requirement.
Each accepted pairing begins with Chemistry, and the second subject may be Biology, Zoology or Botany. The reference to the UTME entry requirement means your O Level credits are still assessed.
JAMB Score
All candidates interested in getting admitted into UNN for the 2026/2027 session should know that to be eligible for the screening, you must have a minimum of 160 or above score in your JAMB result.
Chemistry Has No Substitute on Any Route
Microbiology at UNN requires five science and general credits at O Level, drops to three subjects at UTME, and accepts three Chemistry based pairings at Direct Entry. Chemistry is present in all of them.
Biology can give way to Zoology or Botany at Direct Entry, and Physics can give way to Mathematics at UTME, but Chemistry never moves. Hold it securely, meet the five credits, and score at least 160 in JAMB.
