This article is designed to help students who wish to study Islamic Studies under the Faculty of Arts and Humanities at the Sokoto State University (SSU).
It is very important for all candidates who wish to apply for any of the courses offered at SSU to carefully confirm and see if the course they selected is offered in the institution before registering for JAMB.
The requirements for this course come in three parts, namely the WAEC or NECO subject combination, the four JAMB UTME papers, and the Direct Entry route. One score threshold applies to every candidate entering through UTME.
About Sokoto State University
The Sokoto State University (SSU) is located in Sokoto State, Nigeria.
It was established in 2009 as part of a motivated effort on the part of the Sokoto State to satisfy the quest of the people of the state for excellence and education.
It began as the Sokoto State University School of Developmental Studies, which ran a one-year degree program to prepare students for the University.
Admission Requirements for Islamic Studies
WAEC/NECO Subject Combination
The WAEC/NECO subject combination and requirements needed to study Islamic Studies is Five (5) SSCE credits in English Language and Islamic Studies or Arabic and any three relevant subjects.
JAMB Subject Combination
In UTME, please note that the English Language is Compulsory for this course.
Therefore, the three (3) other JAMB UTME subject combinations needed to study Islamic Studies at SSU include Islamic Studies together with two other Arts subjects.

These are the conditions you need to fulfill to gain Direct Entry admission to study Islamic Studies if you do not intend to use UTME.
You require two (2) ‘A’ Level/NCE passes, one of which should be Islamic Studies.
JAMB Score
All candidates interested in getting admitted into SSU for the 2026/2027 session should know that to be eligible for the screening, you must have scored a minimum of 180 and above in your JAMB result.
Arabic as an Alternative at SSU Islamic Studies
The O’level line gives candidates a choice that the later stages do not. Five SSCE credits are needed in English Language and either Islamic Studies or Arabic, plus any three relevant subjects.
Arabic therefore stands in for Islamic Studies at that first stage only. At UTME the subject is named directly, sitting alongside English Language and two other Arts subjects.
Direct Entry follows the same pattern. Two A’level or NCE passes are required and one of them must be Islamic Studies, with no Arabic alternative offered on that route.
Candidates using UTME need a minimum of 180 and above in their JAMB result for the 2026/2027 session. If you are relying on an Arabic credit, plan for Islamic Studies to appear in your JAMB papers regardless.
