About the University of Benin

The University of Benin (UNIBEN) is a federal government-owned research university founded in 1970 and located in Benin City, Edo State. It is one of Nigeria’s oldest universities, with a large student population and a roughly 10:1 student-staff ratio.

Admission is competitive given the volume of yearly applicants, and the National Universities Commission (NUC) has accredited its faculties, including the Department of Adult Education covered here.

O’Level Subject Combination

The O’level subject combination and requirements needed to study Adult Education / English Literature are five SSCE credits, including English and Mathematics or TC II, with a pass in English and at least four other subjects.

Three of these should come from Literature in English, History, French, Yoruba, Igbo, Hausa, CRK, Islamic Studies, Geography/Physics, Economics, Government, and Mathematics.

JAMB Subject Combination

In UTME, English Language is compulsory for this course. The three (3) other JAMB UTME subject combinations needed to study Adult Education / English Literature under the Faculty of Education are Government/History, one Social Science subject, and any other subject.

Candidates who don’t intend to use UTME can fulfill these conditions to gain Direct Entry admission to study Adult Education / English Literature. You require two (2) ‘A’ Level passes, or NCE merit in two (2) subjects.

JAMB Score

All candidates interested in getting admitted into UNIBEN for the 2026/2027 session should know that to be eligible for the screening, you must have scored 200 or above in your JAMB result.

Five Sub-Tracks Under UNIBEN Adult Education

UNIBEN’s Adult Education waiver list actually spans five distinct sub-tracks, from English and Literature to Political Science, each with its own specific subject pairing, so match your qualification to the right one.

Confirm these requirements against UNIBEN’s current admission brochure before registering, since the 200 JAMB benchmark can shift between sessions.
