Entry Requirements

O’Level Subject Combination

The O’level subject combination and requirements needed to study Arabic Studies are as follows:

Five (5) SSCE credit passes in English Language, Arabic, and three (3) other relevant subjects.

Only English Language and Arabic are named. The other three credits need only be relevant, which is the loosest wording used anywhere on this page and leaves the choice largely to the candidate.

JAMB UTME Subject Combination

Candidates will write the following Four (4) Subjects in JAMB.

  • English Language.
  • Arabic and two (2) subjects from Arts and/or Social Sciences.

The UTME form tightens that wording. Arabic joins the compulsory English Language, and the two remaining papers must now come from the Arts or the Social Sciences rather than from anywhere at all.

Direct Entry Requirement

These are the conditions you need to fulfill to gain Direct Entry admission to study Arabic Studies if you don’t intend to use UTME. You require;

  • Two (2) ‘A’ level passes in Arabic and any other Arts subject.

Direct Entry tightens it once more. Arabic is compulsory again and the single companion pass has to be an Arts subject, with the Social Sciences no longer accepted.

JAMB Score

All candidates interested in getting admitted into UNIJOS for the 2026/2027 session should know that to be eligible for the screening, you must have a minimum score of 180 or above in your JAMB result.

The Companion Subjects Narrow at Each Stage

Arabic is compulsory on all three routes and nothing substitutes for it. What changes is the company it is allowed to keep. At O Level the other three credits need only be relevant subjects.

On the JAMB form they must be Arts or Social Science subjects, and at Direct Entry the single companion pass must be an Arts subject. A candidate planning for the widest set of options should therefore build an Arts combination from the start, and score at least 180 for the 2026/2027 session.
