This is to notify the general public and all aspiring University of Jos (UNIJOS) students that the Department of Chemistry admission requirements has been published.
Chemistry is specific about school subjects and noticeably vague about diploma qualifications. Below are the five O Level credits, the UTME combination, both Direct Entry routes and the score UNIJOS asks for before a candidate is invited to screening.

Entry Requirements
O’Level Subject Combination
The O’level subject combination and requirements needed to study Chemistry include the following:
Five (5) SSCE credit passes in English Language, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, and Biology.
All five credits are named here, leaving nothing to the candidate. Mathematics, Physics and Biology are all required at this stage even though only two of them are needed later.
JAMB UTME Subject Combination
Candidates will write the following Four (4) Subjects in JAMB.
- English Language
- Chemistry and any two subjects from below:
- Physics
- Biology
- Mathematics
The UTME form relaxes that. Chemistry joins the compulsory English Language, and the two remaining papers are a pick of two from Physics, Biology and Mathematics, so one of the three can be dropped.
Direct Entry Requirement
These are the conditions you need to fulfill to gain Direct Entry admission to study Chemistry if you don’t intend to use UTME. You require;
- Two (2) ‘A’ level passes in Chemistry and any one (1) in Physics, Mathematics, or Biology.
- ND/NCE with good grades in relevant ‘O’ level subjects.
The first line is precise and the second is not. Where other UNIJOS listings name an upper or lower credit, this one asks only for good grades in relevant O level subjects, so a diploma holder should ask the department what standard is actually applied.
JAMB Score
All candidates interested in getting admitted into UNIJOS for the 2026/2027 session should know that to be eligible for the screening, you must have a minimum score of 180 or above in your JAMB result.
A Diploma Route With No Stated Threshold
Chemistry itself is the only subject with no alternative anywhere on the page. It is a named O Level credit, a compulsory UTME paper, and the one fixed pass on the A Level route into the course.
The second Direct Entry line is the one to be careful with. An ND or NCE is accepted, but the page sets no grade threshold at all and says only that the grades should be good, which is worth confirming directly with the department. UTME candidates need at least 180 for the 2026/2027 session.
