Entry Requirements
O’Level Subject Combination
The O’level subject combination and requirements needed to study Education & English Language include the following:
Five SSCE credit passes to include English Language and Literature in English plus three other Arts or Social Science subjects.
Only two of the five credits are named. English Language and Literature in English are fixed, and the other three come from the Arts or the Social Sciences, so Government, History or Economics can make up the total.
JAMB UTME Subject Combination
Candidates will write the following Four (4) Subjects in JAMB.
- English Language.
- Literature in English and one Art and any other subjects.
English Language is compulsory for every UTME candidate anyway, so the department is really adding Literature in English and a second Arts subject. The fourth slot is open.
Direct Entry Requirement
These are the conditions you need to fulfill to gain Direct Entry admission to study Education and English Language if you don’t intend to use UTME. You require;
- Two ‘A’ level passes in relevant teaching subjects, including Literature in English.
- NCE with credit or merit passes in two relevant subjects.
Literature in English is named again on the A Level route, so it stays compulsory there. The NCE route does not name it, asking only for two relevant teaching subjects.
JAMB Score
All candidates interested in getting admitted into UNIJOS for the 2026/2027 session should know that to be eligible for the screening, you must have a minimum score of 180 or above in your JAMB result.
An English Course With No Mathematics Condition
Read the three routes side by side and Mathematics never appears. It is not among the five O Level credits, not on the JAMB combination, and neither Direct Entry route asks for it. The three free credits must be Arts or Social Science subjects.
Literature in English carries through instead. Hold it at O Level, enter it on your JAMB form with English Language and one more Arts subject, and score at least 180 for the 2026/2027 session.
