This article is designed to help students who wish to study Mining Engineering under the Faculty of Engineering, Environment & Technology at the University of Jos.
Confirm that Mining Engineering is still listed at UNIJOS before you register for JAMB. The waiver section here carries the Direct Entry conditions as well as a sitting rule that applies to everyone.
What became the University of Jos was established in November 1971 from the elite campus of the University of Ibadan.
The first students were admitted in January 1972 as pre-degree students, and the first Bachelor of Arts degree program began in October 1973.
In October 1975, the military government under General Murtala Mohammed established the Unijos as a separate institution. The first Vice-Chancellor of the Unijos was Professor Gilbert Onuaguluchi.
Classes began at the newly reorganized University of Jos in October 1976, with 575 students spreading over the existing four faculties of Arts and Social Sciences, Education, Natural Sciences, and Medical Sciences.
Post-graduate programs were added in 1977. By 1978 Faculties of Law and Environmental Sciences were established, and the Faculties of Arts and Social Sciences were separated.
In 2003, the Carnegie Corporation of New York gave Unijos a $2 million grant to form its own fundraising department.
O’Level Subject Combination
The O’level subject combination and requirements needed to study Mining Engineering;
You Require
Five SSCE credit passes in Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, English Language, and any other Science subjects.
Four credits are named and the fifth must be another science subject. Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and English Language leave no room for an Arts or commercial paper.
Subjects Special Consideration (Waiver) Remarks
- UNIJOS – requires two (2) ‘A’ Level or IJMB passes from Chemistry, Physics, and Mathematics. Accepts ND credit in Civil Engineering or related programmes from a recognized institution. Accepts ‘O’ Level credit pass in Mathematics. (All credits in one sitting).
This block does more than one job. It sets the Direct Entry conditions, accepting two A Level or IJMB passes from Chemistry, Physics and Mathematics, or an ND at credit in Civil Engineering or a related programme.
It also adds the single sitting rule. All five credits must come from one examination, which rules out combining two WAEC or NECO results.

The Single Sitting Rule at UNIJOS Mining Engineering
Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry decide this application. They are compulsory credits, they fill the JAMB form beside English Language, and any two of them satisfy the A Level or IJMB route.
The condition that catches people out is the one in brackets. All credits must be obtained at a single sitting, so a second attempt result will not combine with the first. Clear 180 in JAMB for the 2026/2027 session.
