This is to inform the general public that the management of the University Of Nigeria (UNN), Nsukka, has published the admission requirements for her Department of Biological Science aspirants.
Biological Science is one of the more tightly specified courses at UNN, with almost every subject named in advance. Below are the five O Level credits, the UTME combination, the two Direct Entry routes and the score the university asks for.
About UNN
The University of Nigeria was the first indigenous university in Nigeria to attain full-fledged and autonomous status. It was modelled after the American educational system. It is the first land-grant university in Africa and one of Nigeria’s five most reputed universities.
The University has 102 academic departments in 15 Faculties and offers 82 undergraduate and 211 postgraduate programs.
O’Level Subject Combination
The O’level subject combination and requirements needed to study Biological Science are five SSCE (5) credit passes and should include English Language, Mathematics, Chemistry, Biology, and any other Science subject.
That sentence accounts for all five credits. English Language, Mathematics, Chemistry and Biology are named outright, and the fifth has to be another Science subject, so there is no free choice anywhere in the list.
JAMB Subject Combination
In UTME, please note that the English Language is Compulsory for this course.
Therefore, the three (3) other JAMB UTME subject combinations needed to study Biological Science are Biology, Chemistry, and Physics or Mathematics.
Biology and Chemistry carry straight over from O Level. The fourth slot is a choice between Physics and Mathematics, so a candidate can simply enter Mathematics again.

Direct Entry Requirement
You need the following to gain Direct Entry admission to study Biological Science if you don’t intend to use UTME
- Two (2) ‘A’ level passes to include one (1) of Botany, Zoology, Biology, or Chemistry.
- ND/NCE in related program/subject.
Direct Entry opens the subject list out. Botany and Zoology appear here for the first time, and only one of the four named subjects has to be among your two passes. A National Diploma or NCE in a related programme is accepted as an alternative route altogether.
JAMB Score
All candidates interested in getting admitted into UNN for the 2026/2027 session should know that to be eligible for the screening, you must have a minimum score of 200 or above in your JAMB result.
Botany and Zoology Only Count at Direct Entry
The UTME route gives a candidate almost nothing to decide. Four of the five O Level credits are named, the fifth must be a Science subject, and three of the four UTME papers are fixed before you start filling in the form.
Direct Entry is where that changes. Botany and Zoology count there and nowhere else, one relevant pass out of two is enough, and an ND or NCE in a related programme is accepted on its own terms. UTME candidates need at least 200 for the 2026/2027 session.
