Mechanical Engineering at the University of Nigeria (UNN) can be entered either straight from secondary school or from a polytechnic or technical college background. The sections below set out both paths and what each one demands.
Candidates coming through UTME face a fixed science combination with no alternatives. Those applying by Direct Entry have noticeably more options, including three qualifications earned outside the A Level system.

About The University of Nigeria
The University of Nigeria, commonly called UNN, is a federal university in Nsukka, Enugu State, Nigeria.
Founded by Nnamdi Azikiwe in 1955 and formally opened on 7 October 1960, the University of Nigeria has four campuses – Nsukka, Enugu, and Ituku-Ozalla – all located in Enugu State and Aba campus in Abia State.
The University of Nigeria was the first full-fledged indigenous and first autonomous university in Nigeria modelled upon the American educational system. It is the first land-grant university in Africa and one of Nigeria’s five most reputed universities.
Entry Requirements
O’Level Subject Combination
The O’level subject combination and requirements needed to study Mechanical Engineering include the following:
- Five (5) SSCE credit passes to include Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, English Language, and any other Science subject.
Four subjects are named and the fifth is still constrained, since it has to be a science. A candidate with strong arts or commercial subjects in the remaining slot will not meet this requirement.
JAMB UTME Subject Combination
Candidates will write the following Four (4) Subjects in JAMB.
- English Language.
- Mathematics
- Physics
- Chemistry
The four JAMB subjects are simply the four named O Level subjects repeated. There is no element of choice at this stage, so your registration should match the list exactly.
Direct Entry Requirement
These are the conditions you need to fulfil to gain Direct Entry admission to study Mechanical Engineering if you don’t intend to use UTME. You require;
- Two (2) ‘A’ level passes from Chemistry, Physics, and Mathematics.
- ND upper credit, NCE technical, and HND in Mech. Engineering.
The second bullet is where this course opens up. An upper credit National Diploma, a technical NCE or an HND in Mechanical Engineering are all recognised, which gives polytechnic and technical college graduates a route that does not depend on A Levels.
JAMB Score
All candidates interested in getting admitted into UNN for the 2026/2027 session should know that to be eligible for the screening, you must have a minimum of 160 or above score in your JAMB result.
Polytechnic Qualifications Count Alongside A Levels Here
The UTME route into UNN Mechanical Engineering is rigid. Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics are required at O Level and repeated in the JAMB combination, with English Language and one further science completing the picture.
Direct Entry is the flexible half. Beyond two A Level passes in those same sciences, the department accepts an upper credit ND, a technical NCE or an HND in the subject. A JAMB score of 160 qualifies you for screening.
