Zoology at the University of Nigeria (UNN) states its O Level requirement twice, and the two versions do not match. The waiver adds Chemistry, makes Mathematics optional and limits you to two sittings.
Because the waiver is the UNN specific instruction, it is the version to plan around. Read it carefully before assuming the shorter requirement above it is all the department expects of you.

Entry Requirements
O’Level Subject Combination
The O’level subject combination and requirements needed to study Zoology include the following:
- Five (5) SSCE credit passes in English Language, Mathematics, Biology, and two (2) other science subjects.
Special Consideration (Waiver) Remarks
- UNN requires five (5) O’ level credit passes obtained at not more than two sittings, including Biology, English Language, Mathematics or Physics, and Chemistry at School Certificate or its equivalent.
The waiver differs from the line above it in three ways. It names Chemistry outright, it allows Physics in place of Mathematics, and it caps the sittings at two. Credits spread across three or more attempts will not be accepted.
JAMB UTME Subject Combination
Candidates will write the following Four (4) Subjects in JAMB.
- English Language.
- Biology and any two (2) subjects from below:
- Physics
- Chemistry
- Mathematics
Biology is compulsory at UTME and the other two subjects come from Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics. You therefore leave one of those three out, which is a freer choice than the O Level waiver allows.
Direct Entry Requirement
These are the conditions you need to fulfil to gain Direct Entry admission to study Zoology if you don’t intend to use UTME. You require;
- Two (2) ‘A’ level passes or NCE in Biology, Zoology, or Botany and one other Science subject
Special Consideration (Waiver) Remarks
UNN accepts:
- Two ‘A’ level GCE/HSC passes in Chemistry and Biology/Botany/Zoology plus UTME requirement.
- A degree in relevant fields plus UTME requirements, HND, and NCE credit pass is acceptable.
JAMB Score
All candidates interested in getting admitted into UNN for the 2026/2027 session should know that to be eligible for the screening, you must have a minimum of 160 or above score in your JAMB result.
Mathematics or Physics, and Never More Than Two Sittings
The two O Level statements on this page pull apart, and the UNN waiver is the one that counts. It requires Biology, English Language, Chemistry and either Mathematics or Physics, taken across no more than two sittings.
From there the course opens up. Biology plus two of Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics covers UTME, Direct Entry accepts degrees and diplomas as well as A Levels, and 160 in JAMB is enough to reach screening.
