The Department of Bio-Chemistry at the Federal University of Technology Owerri (FUTO) has published its entry requirements, covering the O’level credits, the UTME subject combination, two direct entry routes and the JAMB score needed for screening.

FUTO

Biochemistry asks for the full science set at O’level. English Language, Chemistry, Mathematics, Physics and Biology are all named, which leaves no room to work around a missing credit.

The UTME is slightly kinder, fixing three papers and allowing a choice between Physics and Mathematics for the fourth. That is the only option anywhere in the subject conditions.

Two direct entry routes follow, one through A level passes and one through an NCE, ND or HND in a related programme. Both are reproduced below.

The admission requirements include O’level Subject combinations, JAMB UTME Subject combinations, and School and Departmental Cut-Off Marks.

Entry Requirements

O’Level Subject Combination

The O’level subject combination and requirements needed to study Biochemistry include Five SSCE credits in the following subjects:

  • English Language
  • Chemistry
  • Mathematics
  • Physics
  • Biology

All five are compulsory and all five must be credits. This is the condition that rules out most unsuccessful applicants, usually on a single missing subject.

JAMB UTME Subject Combination

Candidates will write the following Four (4) Subjects in JAMB

  • English Language
  • Biology
  • Chemistry
  • Physics or Mathematics

Three papers are fixed and the fourth is a choice between Physics and Mathematics. Both are accepted on equal terms, so register whichever you are stronger in.

Direct Entry Requirement

These are the conditions you need to fulfill to gain Direct Entry admission to study Biochemistry if you don’t intend to use UTME. You require;

  • Two (2) ‘A’ level passes chosen from Chemistry, Mathematics, Physics, and Biology.
  • NCE/ND/HND in related programmes plus the UTME requirements.

The second bullet is conditional in a way the first is not. It asks for the UTME requirements in addition to the qualification, so the subject conditions above still apply.

JAMB Score

All candidates interested in getting admitted to the Federal University of Technology, Owerri, for the 2026/2027 session should know that to be eligible for the screening, you must have scored 160 or above in your JAMB result.

That score takes you into the screening exercise, where places are actually allocated. Treat it as the minimum needed to remain in contention rather than a target.

About the Federal University of Technology Owerri

The Federal University of Technology Owerri (FUTO) is a technology-intensive university in Imo state, south-east Nigeria. It was founded in 1980 in Owerri, the state capital.

FUTO, Nigeria’s premier Federal University of Technology, was established to advance the course of cutting-edge technical education in Nigeria.

The University has earned a well-deserved reputation for producing top talents in diverse areas of Science and Technology over the years.

Two Ways Into FUTO Biochemistry

The UTME route needs five O’level credits in English Language, Chemistry, Mathematics, Physics and Biology, four UTME papers, and a JAMB score of 160 or above.

The direct entry route needs two A level passes from Chemistry, Mathematics, Physics and Biology, or an NCE, ND or HND in a related programme together with the UTME requirements.

Check your O’level credits against the list first, since both routes depend on them, and confirm the current conditions with FUTO before you register.
