Sokoto State University (SSU) offers History under its Faculty of Arts and Humanities, and this page sets out the WAEC and NECO credits, the JAMB UTME combination, Direct Entry and the JAMB score required.
History runs through all three routes. It is a named O’Level credit, one of the four UTME subjects, and the subject that must appear among the two A Level or NCE passes for Direct Entry.
SSU also sets its screening threshold at 180 rather than the 200 used by several older federal universities, which gives candidates a little more room on the JAMB score.

Admission Requirements for History
WAEC/NECO Subject Combination
The WAEC/NECO subject combination and requirements needed to study History is Five (5) SSCE credits, including History and English Language.
Only two subjects are named, leaving three credits to your own choice. Government, Literature in English and Christian or Islamic Religious Studies are the usual companions for a History application.
JAMB Subject Combination
In UTME, please note that the English Language is Compulsory for this course.
Therefore, the three (3) other JAMB UTME subject combinations needed to study History at SSU include History and any other two subjects from Arts and Social Sciences.
The two accompanying subjects must come from the Arts or Social Sciences, so a science subject will not count here. Choosing from the same subjects you hold as credits keeps your preparation in one place.
Direct Entry Requirement
These are the conditions you need to fulfill to gain Direct Entry admission to study History if you do not intend to use UTME.
You require two (2) ‘A’ Level/NCE passes in History and any other related subjects.
History is named again here, so there is no route into the department that does not involve it. The second subject is described only as related, which leaves that choice open.
JAMB Score
All candidates interested in getting admitted into SSU for the 2026/2027 session should know that to be eligible for the screening, you must have scored a minimum of 180 and above in your JAMB result.
History Must Be a Credit, a UTME Subject and an A Level Pass at SSU
Every route into this department names the subject itself. A candidate without History at O’Level cannot meet the requirement by strength in Government or Literature instead.
Around that one fixed point the department is flexible, leaving three O’Level credits unnamed and asking only that your two other UTME subjects come from the Arts or Social Sciences.
A JAMB score of 180 or above makes you eligible for the SSU screening, and Direct Entry runs on two A Level or NCE passes including History.
